Kızıldağ Yaylası

Kızıldağ Yaylası is located within the boundaries of the Karaisalı district in Adana Province, in southern Türkiye. The plateau is situated at an elevation of approximately 1,500 metres on the extensions of the Taurus Mountains and is about 120 kilometres from the city centre of Adana.

Geographical Structure and Natural Features

Kızıldağ Yaylası has a mountainous and rugged terrain. Its surroundings are largely covered by pine, oak and juniper forests. The region’s natural vegetation is highly diverse and hosts several endemic species. Due to its geographical location, the plateau experiences a cool and low-humidity climate during summer months. This characteristic makes it a preferred seasonal residence during the summer. Snowfall is occasionally observed during winter months.

Summers on the plateau are cool and winters are cold. Even in July and August, temperatures remain relatively low. The region exhibits typical highland climate features with lower humidity levels compared to coastal areas.

Access

Access to Kızıldağ Yaylası is provided via the Karaisalı district. A paved road connects the district centre to the plateau. The route includes winding and steep sections due to the mountainous terrain. Private vehicles are the most common means of transportation.

Socioeconomic and Cultural Structure

The population of the plateau increases during summer months. Local residents migrate to the plateau seasonally to continue traditional transhumance practices. These activities include animal husbandry, beekeeping and small-scale agricultural production. Summer houses are predominantly constructed from stone or wood and most of these structures are designed for seasonal use.

Kızıldağ Yaylası holds regional significance for rural tourism. Activities such as nature walking, camping and picnicking are commonly practiced. Additionally, the annual Kızıldağ Karakucak Wrestling Matches, held during summer months, are a traditional event that attracts visitors and contributes to the preservation of local cultural values.

Infrastructure Status

Seasonal supplies of drinking water, electricity and communication services are available on the plateau. Accommodation facilities are limited and typically consist of summer homes and bungalow-style structures. A market, bakery and small businesses in the plateau centre provide food and basic necessities.
