Konjic Wood Carving

Konjic Wood Carving is a traditional craft practiced in the town of Konjic in southern Bosnia and Herzegovina, involving the hand-carving of wooden materials, primarily walnut wood.

The craft, which developed in the Konjic region during the Ottoman period and was passed down from generation to generation through family-run workshops, was inscribed in 2017 on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.^【1】 The Konjic Wood Carving Museum, established in 2019 to showcase the historical development and works of this craft, reopened in its renovated structure on 29 June 2026.^【2】

The craft is based on the hand-carving of region-specific traditional motifs onto furniture, interior elements, and decorative wooden objects using hand tools. Techniques taught through apprenticeship and familial transmission are today used both in the production of traditional handmade furniture and in collaborations with international designers for modern furniture designs.

The Konjic Wood Carving Museum was established in 2019 to preserve, document, and transmit the traditional heritage to future generations. Designed by Orhan Nikšić with an original concept, the museum was awarded the Živa Prize by the Slavic Cultures Forum in 2022 for Best Slavic Museum and the Luigi Micheletti Award by the European Museum Academy.^【3】 Upon reopening on 29 June 2026, the museum features parametric wooden structures, a workshop area where master carvers perform live demonstrations, and a dedicated corner in memory of Besim Nikšić.
