Kravice Waterfall

Kravice Waterfall is a natural waterfall located on the Trebižat River in the Herzegovina region of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is one of the region’s most significant waterfalls due to its geological structure and ecological diversity.

Kravice Waterfall is situated approximately 40 kilometers south of Mostar, near Ljubuški, in the vicinity of the village of Studenci. It has formed over travertine deposits of the Trebižat River. The waterfall has a height of 28 meters and a width of approximately 120 meters.

Around the waterfall, mosses, lichens, algae, and grasses have developed on limestone layers. The area is also covered with fig trees, poplars, and various other tree species.

Natural Environment

The surroundings of Kravice Waterfall are characterized by dense vegetation. In the region, silver lindens, poplars, and fig trees coexist with thick layers of moss and lichen. The travertine terraces are recognized as part of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s natural geological monuments.

During the summer months, when water levels drop, swimming and various water sports are possible in the reservoir area. The waterfall offers different visual experiences throughout the year due to seasonal variations in water levels and changes in vegetation.

Tourism and Recreation

Kravice Waterfall is a popular picnic and swimming destination in the Herzegovina region. It is especially known during the summer months for swimming, camping, and rafting activities. Visitors can also explore stalactites in a natural cave near the waterfall, ancient water mills, and small historical structures in the surrounding area.

During summer, evaporation from the reservoir creates a natural mist layer around midday, providing a unique climatic comfort to the area.

The waterfall is open to visitors from May to October and remains closed during the winter months.

Environmental Condition and Water Quality

The Trebižat River is a karstic water system. Kravice Waterfall is one of several waterfalls formed by this river. Microbiological analyses conducted in 2018 and 2019 found that the swimming water quality at the waterfall falls within the “excellent” category according to the parameters specified in the European Union’s 2006/7/EC directive. Measurements revealed fecal streptococcus levels between 10–150 cfu/100 mL and Escherichia coli levels between 20–160 cfu/100 mL.^【1】
