Lambda is a technology company that provides graphics processing unit (GPU)-based cloud solutions, servers, and workstations. It was founded in 2012 by Stephen and Michael Balaban in San Jose, California. The company offers high-performance computing systems used in artificial intelligence (AI) and deep learning workflows. Initially launched as a developer of AI-powered photo editing applications, Lambda later shifted its focus to hardware and cloud services centered on GPUs (Graphics Processing Units).

Products and Services

Among Lambda’s products are its Scalar servers. These servers are equipped with NVIDIA H100 NVL Tensor Core GPUs and are designed to support compute-intensive workloads such as large language models (LLMs). Scalar servers offer a total of 1128 GB of video RAM (VRAM), 192 processor cores, and 8192 GB of system memory. They utilize high-speed NVLink interconnect technology.

Lambda Stack Software

Lambda Stack is a software package that includes PyTorch, TensorFlow, NVIDIA CUDA (Compute Unified Device Architecture), CuDNN (CUDA Deep Neural Network), and GPU drivers. It enables users to focus directly on research and development without dealing with driver and compatibility issues. Lambda Stack is pre-installed on all Lambda hardware and cloud services.

Cloud Solutions

Lambda offers two types of cloud solutions: Public Cloud and Private Cloud. The Public Cloud allows users to scale instantly from a single GPU to thousands of GPUs in clusters. The Private Cloud offers access to large-scale, dedicated GPU clusters. Lambda manages the hardware in Tier 3 data centers and provides infrastructure, including cooling, power, and network connectivity.

Clients and Applications

Lambda’s clients include Intel, Microsoft, Google, Amazon Research, Tencent, Sony, Netflix, IBM, Disney, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Stanford University, Harvard University, the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), the U.S. Department of Defense, and the Los Alamos National Laboratory. The company’s products are used in fields such as academic research, defense, healthcare, and media.

Funding

As of 2025, Lambda has raised a total of $863 million in funding, and its valuation has reached $2.5 billion. Andra Capital and SGW led its most recent funding round (Series D).

Future Outlook

Lambda aims to expand its GPU-based cloud infrastructure to speed up and cost-effectively process AI and deep learning. One of its long-term goals is to make access to GPU computing power as ubiquitous and effortless as access to electricity. Toward this end, the company continues to invest in advanced GPU architectures and cloud services.
