Locke & Key (Series)

Adapted from the same-named comic book series created by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodríguez, Locke & Key is a Netflix original series that blends fantasy horror and mystery elements. Developed for television by Carlton Cuse Meredith Averill and Aron Eli Coleite the production centers on the story of the Locke family three siblings and their mother who move to the family’s ancestral estate Keyhouse in Matheson Massachusetts following the tragic death of their father. The discovery of a series of magical keys hidden within the house which grant the siblings extraordinary abilities takes a dangerous turn when a dark entity emerges intent on seizing the keys for itself.

The journey of Locke & Key to the screen followed a long and arduous process after the success of the comic book series. Previously developed as a pilot by platforms such as Fox and Hulu but rejected the project ultimately found life under Netflix in 2020. The show’s production design focused intensely on the architectural structure of Keyhouse the central setting and the aesthetic of the magical keys.

The narrative structure of the series is shaped through the individual members of the Locke family and their connections to the past. The depth of the characters is enhanced by the performances which amplify the emotional weight of the story.
