Marzano Taxonomy

The Marzano Taxonomy is a multidimensional cognitive classification developed to address learning processes more comprehensively. It was created as an alternative to Bloom’s one-dimensional classification of the cognitive domain and is built on three main system on systems:

Knowledge Utilization: Problem solving, experimental inquiry, and decision making.

It assists the student in evaluating and directing their own learning process. Its components are:

Goal Setting: Defining learning objectives.

Process Monitoring: Tracking the effectiveness of the learning process.

Checking Clarity and Accuracy of Understanding: Assessing how accurate and comprehensible the information is.

It relates to the student’s motivation and attitudes toward the learning process. Its components are:

Examining Importance: Evaluating the relevance of the information to the student.

Examining Efficacy: Assessing one’s learning capacity.

Examining Emotional Response and Motivational Level: Identifying emotional and motivational factors toward learning.

The Marzano Taxonomy aims not only for students to acquire only information but also to analyze, apply, and evaluate their own learning processes. It offers a more comprehensive approach compared to traditional taxonomies, particularly in the development of higher-order thinking skills.
