Standing 2.11 meters tall and weighing 112 kg, he played the center and power forward positions. He won an NBA championship with the Detroit Pistons in 2004 and was selected as an NBA All-Star in 2007.
Okur was born in Yalova and completed his secondary education at Cem Sultan High School in Bursa, where he developed an interest in basketball. He began his professional career with Tofaş and Efes Pilsen, honing his skills in local leagues before entering the NBA.
Mehmet Okur’s professional basketball career began in 1997 with Tofaş of the Turkish Basketball League. After winning championships at a young age, he transferred to Efes Pilsen in 2000. He was selected in the second round as the 38th overall pick by the Detroit Pistons in the 2001 NBA Draft and began his NBA career in 2002. With the Pistons, he won the NBA championship in 2004, becoming the first Turkish player to achieve this honor.
In the summer of 2004, he signed a long-term contract with the Utah Jazz. Over seven seasons with Utah, he became one of the team’s most consistent and prolific scorers. His outstanding performance during the 2006–2007 season earned him a selection to the 2007 NBA All-Star team, making him the first Turkish player in NBA history to be named an All-Star. In 2011, he briefly played for the New Jersey Nets, followed by a stint with the Portland Trail Blazers in 2012, after which he retired from professional basketball.
Mehmet Okur was a key member of the Turkey men’s national basketball team. He played a vital role in Turkey’s historic silver medal win at EuroBasket 2001, one of the greatest achievements in Turkish basketball history. Over many years, he contributed significantly to the national team on both defense and offense. However, injuries sustained during NBA seasons caused him to miss several international tournaments.
Okur helped build a bridge from Anatolia to the NBA, making a significant contribution to Turkish sports. His long tenure with the Utah Jazz established a new model for power forwards and centers in the modern game. From 2014 to 2016, he served as a Utah Jazz ambassador and later as a player development coach for the Phoenix Suns.
After retiring from active play, Mehmet Okur remained involved in basketball. In 2014, his former team, the Utah Jazz, named him a team ambassador. In 2016, he was appointed as a player development coach by the Phoenix Suns, where he supported the technical and mental growth of young players. In his coaching career, he became particularly known for helping tall players adapt to the modern game. He also occasionally collaborated with the Turkish Basketball Federation, mentoring young national team players.
Passionate about technical development, Okur continues to work in coaching and mentoring after retirement.
