The 2025 Oaxaca train crash was a derailment incident that occurred on 28 December 2025 in the state of Oaxaca in southern Mexico. At least 13 people lost their lives and 98 people were injured. The incident occurred when the Interoceanic Train, a passenger train operating on the route between Veracruz and Salina Cruz, derailed near the town of Nizanda in Oaxaca state.

The Interoceanic Train is operated by the Mexican Navy (Semar). The railway line serves as a strategic corridor connecting the port of Salina Cruz on the Pacific Ocean coast with Coatzacoalcos on the Gulf of Mexico coast. The line is a component of the Interoceanic Corridor project, constructed to establish a transcontinental link along the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. The project aims to promote regional economic development, provide an alternative to freight transport, and create a parallel route to maritime shipping. The railway line opened in 2023.
Time and Location of the Crash
The crash occurred when the train derailed while passing over a bridge or a steep section near the town of Nizanda. Authorities stated that the derailment happened as the train lost control while negotiating a curve. The incident took place on the section of the line designated for passenger transport.
Passengers and Crew
Approximately 250 people were on board the train at the time of the crash, including 241 passengers and 9 crew members. Some of the injured were transported to hospitals while others received treatment at the scene. Several of the injured were reported to be in serious condition.
Rescue and Response Operations
Following the crash, the Mexican Navy, the Ministry of the Interior, civil protection units, and medical teams were dispatched to the site. Under the direction of the Navy, search and rescue operations involved naval personnel, ground and air ambulances, and unmanned aerial vehicles.
