Mızık Çamı

Mızık Çamı is a historic black pine (Pinus nigra) located in the village of Domur, within the Domaniç district of Kütahya province, and is protected under the status of “monumental tree.” This tree is associated with the founding period of the Ottoman State and draws attention for both its natural characteristics and cultural traditions.

Location

Mızık Çamı is situated approximately three kilometers from the center of Domaniç, within the boundaries of Domur village. This location lies within the natural landscape of the Domaniç highlands and surrounding forested areas, making it one of the prominent features of the region’s nature-culture tourism.

Physical Characteristics

Mızık Çamı is a black pine. According to measurements:

• Height: 11 meters
• Trunk circumference: 4.70 meters
• Age: Approximately 740–750 years

The Kütahya Provincial Environmental Status Report notes that an assessment conducted in 1980 determined the tree’s age to be 743 years.

Historical and Cultural Significance

Mızık Çamı holds an important place in legends related to the founding of Ottoman history. According to the tradition, Osman Gazi, the founder of the Ottoman State, was rocked in a swing hung from the branches of this tree by his grandmother, Hayme Ana. For this reason, it is also known among the local population as the “Beşik Çamı” (Cradle Pine).

This legend elevates the tree beyond a mere natural entity, transforming it into a symbolic element linked to the historical heritage of the Ottoman State.

Natural Process and Registration

Mızık Çamı fell due to natural causes in the 1980s, near the end of its long life. Shortly after its fall, the tree was officially registered as a “monumental tree” by the Board for the Protection of Cultural and Natural Heritage on 15 July 1988.

Today, Mızık Çamı is regarded as an important part of Kütahya’s cultural and natural heritage. Registered as a monumental tree and associated with the founding era of the Ottoman State, it has been featured in various cultural publications.
