Mortal World 2 (Film)

Dead World 2 is a 2023 Turkish action comedy film directed by Ali Atay. It is the sequel to the 2018 film Dead World and follows the Mermer family after the events of the first film. The movie was released in cinemas in Türkiye on 1 December 2023.

Plot

At the end of the first film, the Mermer family members, whose identities were exposed and who became fugitives, have spent the intervening time trying to build new lives. They intend to continue their lives as if they were ordinary people. However, their past refuses to let them go. The international criminal organization they were tied to reaches out to them and assigns them one final task they cannot refuse. After Zafer is kidnapped by the organization, the Mermer family is once again drawn into the dangerous and absurd world of crime, unwillingly, in order to rescue their friend and completely escape the organization’s grasp. This process forces the family to reunite and fight together to overcome formidable obstacles.

Ali Atay once again directed the film. The screenplay was written by Ali Atay, Feyyaz Yiğit, and Aziz Kedi. Production was handled by TAFF Pictures. The 117-minute film was shot in Turkish. Dead World 2 premiered in cinemas in Türkiye on 1 December 2023.

Character Analysis

• Gazanfer: Gazanfer is the most experienced and level-headed member of the Mermer family, serving as its patriarchal figure. He is a charismatic but stern leader who acts out of a protective instinct toward his family but has not escaped the shadow of his past.
• Oktay: Oktay is the family member who appears rational but consistently makes the most absurd decisions. He harbors a deep desire to be a hero but often makes situations even more complicated.
• Serhan: Serhan is a slightly delinquent and selfish character but never malicious. He stands out through his practical intelligence, though he is not without ego-driven outbursts.
• Begüm: Begüm is with the family as Serhan’s girlfriend. She stands firm in a male-dominated structure, possesses a sharp tongue, and at times emerges as the most level-headed member.
• Zafer: Zafer is the group’s most “distracted” and “unaware of what he is doing” member. He typically reacts inappropriately and at the wrong moments.
• Serbest: Serbest is one of the film’s most absurd and surreal characters. He has a volatile nature, oscillating between emotional fragility and aggression.
• İlhami: İlhami represents the unresolved debts from the past. He is a cold, dangerous, and charismatic figure.
• Atakan: Atakan is like a landmine ready to explode. He can become enraged over the smallest incident but has an inwardly fragile nature. His humor is largely generated through his aggression.
• Şenol: Although Şenol appears clumsy and inept from the outside, he is loyal and practical in his own way. Though often relegated to the background, he is a hidden supporter of the family.
