Museum of Contemporary Glass Arts

Museum of Contemporary Glass Arts is the first museum in Türkiye dedicated to exhibiting contemporary glass art. It was established in 2007 through a joint initiative of the Eskişehir Metropolitan Municipality, Anadolu University, and the Glass Friends Group. The museum houses works by international glass artists and also hosts educational and cultural activities alongside its artistic productions.

Location and Architectural Structure

The museum is located in the Odunpazarı district of Eskişehir, within two historic mansions that exemplify traditional Ottoman-Turkish civil architecture. These buildings date back to the 19th century and have been restored to serve as exhibition spaces and a museum. The original wood and stone craftsmanship of the structures has been preserved, and the interior spaces have been reconfigured to suit contemporary art exhibitions.

Founding Purpose and Mission

The museum was established to document, support, and promote contemporary glass art production in Türkiye. It also functions as an interdisciplinary platform that brings together artists, academics, and visitors. Its mission is to contribute to the recognition of glass not merely as a craft material but as an artistic medium.

Collection and Exhibitions

The museum’s collection consists primarily of original and handcrafted contemporary glass works. The collection can be examined in three main categories:

1. Artists from Türkiye: Works by leading Turkish glass artists such as Mehmet Koçak, Ayşe Takıoğlu, Felekşan Onar, and Candan Tuna are featured.
2. International Artists: Contemporary glass objects, stained glass works, and sculptures by artists from countries including the United States, Japan, Italy, and Germany are part of the collection.
3. Thematic Exhibition Works: Glass pieces loaned to the museum or displayed temporarily as part of specific thematic exhibitions belong to this category.

The works in the collection are created using various techniques such as hot glass (blown glass), cold glass (cold working), kiln forming, glass engraving, and stained glass.

Educational and Cultural Activities

The museum organizes workshops, seminars, artist talks, and opening events for contemporary glass art enthusiasts. It also provides academic support for university students, including an open archive for thesis research and a curated collection of resources on glass art.

Guided tours are conducted throughout the year for primary and secondary school students, offering them foundational knowledge about the history, techniques, and production processes of glass art.

Organizational Structure and Management

The museum operates under the Eskişehir Metropolitan Municipality. Collection management and exhibition curation are carried out with the participation of academic advisors from the Faculty of Fine Arts and the Glass Arts Department of Anadolu University.
