The Archdiocese of New York has reached an $800 million settlement with approximately 1,300 victims to resolve allegations of sexual abuse allegedly committed by clergy and church employees.【1】 Reached after a legal process lasting more than seven years, this settlement is the second-largest compensation payment in the history of the U.S. Catholic Church for clergy abuse.【2】 The official signing of the agreement will take place during the week of November 6. The agreement includes a structured payment plan, non-financial accountability measures, and real estate sales to be conducted by the archdiocese to help fund the settlement.【3】

Under the terms of the settlement, the $800 million will be deposited into a trust account established for the victims over a 15-month period, beginning with an initial payment of $615 million. Eligible claimants will be able to benefit from a $250,000 early payment option; although individual compensation amounts may exceed this figure depending on the severity of the abuse suffered.

To finance the settlement, the archdiocese has laid off some their staff, reduced operating expenses, and begun selling valuable real estate in Manhattan with the initial goal of raising $300 million.【4】

Legal Framework and Background

The lawsuits arose following the enactment of New York State’s 2019 Child Victims Act, which established a temporary retroactive statute of limitations allowing victims to file lawsuits that had previously been barred by the statute of limitations.【5】

This unanimous agreement was signed following years of mediation and resolved the lawsuits filed against the archdiocese, which encompasses 300 churches, more than 150 parochial schools, and 2.5 million Catholics in Manhattan, the Bronx, Staten Island, and seven northern counties.【5】 Furthermore, the agreement preserves the plaintiffs’ right to initiate separate legal proceedings against the archdiocese’s insurance companies due to ongoing disputes regarding insurance coverage.【6】

Non-Financial Accountability Measures

Beyond financial compensation, the agreement requires the church to implement certain operational and transparency measures. The Archdiocese has agreed to disclose internal documents related to the perpetrators to the public and to keep the list of accused clergy members accessible to everyone.【6】

Statements and Comparison to Prior Payouts

Archbishop Ronald Hicks stated in a message to the archdiocesan clergy that the settlement aims to offer “some measure of healing and reconciliation to all victim-survivors,” while also allowing the church to refocus on its broader religious and charitable mission.【5】 Attorney Jeff Anderson, who represents more than 1,000 plaintiffs across New York State, described the settlement as “powerful moment in the pursuit of justice,” while also noting that victims are experiencing mixed emotions ranging from relief to enduring pain.【6】

This settlement is the second-largest involving a Catholic archdiocese in the U.S., surpassed only by the $880 million settlement reached by the Archdiocese of Los Angeles in 2024.【7】
