Odunpazarı Modern Museum (OMM) Building

Odunpazarı Modern Museum (OMM) is a contemporary art museum located in the Odunpazarı district of Eskişehir. Opened on 7 July 2019, this building was designed by the Japanese architectural firm Kengo Kuma and Associates. In addition to serving as a space for exhibiting modern art, the museum is also notable for its architectural design. As a space that presents modern art in harmony with the region’s historical fabric, OMM makes a significant contribution to Eskişehir’s cultural structure.

The design of OMM highlights Kengo Kuma and Associates’ philosophy of architecture in harmony with nature. Kuma aims to use natural materials wherever possible and to strengthen the relationship between nature and human-made structures. This philosophy is embodied in the construction of OMM through the intensive use of natural materials such as wood, stone, and others. The museum building was inspired by Ottoman dome architecture, traditional Japanese architecture, and the civil architecture of Odunpazarı. This design blends traditional structural elements with a contemporary perspective.

The museum building is a three-story structure, with each floor dedicated to different functional areas. In addition to exhibition halls, the building includes café, a museum shop, and workshop like social spaces, all of which are architecturally integrated in a cohesive manner. The arrangement of exhibition areas within the museum is designed to guide visitors through a kind of architectural journey as they explore the space. The expansive ground floor reflects the historical character of the area, while the narrowing structure toward the upper floors deepens the interaction between visitors and the environment.

The primary material used in the design of OMM is wood, which not only creates a distinctive visual effect but also enhances the building’s relationship with its surroundings. The use of wood gives the structure a unified form, both in its interior spaces and as part of its exterior facade. Additionally, carefully designed strategic systems that allow natural light to enter the space enable visitors to experience continuously changing light effects during their stay. This dynamic interplay of light allows the museum to present a different atmosphere during both day and night.
