History
- Ancient Period: Of's history dates back to the 7th century BC. Of, one of the colonies founded by Milesian seafarers on the Black Sea coast, initially had an independent administration. The region, which later came under the influence of the Persian Empire, was incorporated into the borders of the Kingdom of Pontus in 312 BC. Following the collapse of the Kingdom of Pontus, it came under the rule of the Roman and Byzantine Empires.
- Middle Ages: Of, which maintained its importance during the Byzantine Empire period, developed as a significant trade center during the time of the Empire of Trebizond (1204-1461). Its location on a branch of the Silk Road increased the region's commercial vitality.
- Ottoman Period: With Fatih Sultan Mehmet's conquest of Trabzon in 1461, Of was incorporated into the Ottoman Empire's territories. During the Ottoman period, Of was recorded as a kaza (district) of the Sanjak of Lazistan, attached to the Province of Trabzon, and stood out for its agricultural production in this period. According to 19th-century sources, Of was an important settlement and prominent in agricultural production.
- Recent Period: For approximately 150 years, the Sarıalioğlu family has had a significant influence on Of's local administration. During this time, the family has played an active role in the district's development and governance by holding mayoral and other important positions. This situation stands out as a distinctive feature in Of's socio-political structure.
