Okan Buruk (AA)
Okan Buruk (born 19 October 1973, Istanbul) is a Turkish football manager and former international footballer. Throughout his career, he won a total of eleven Süper Lig titles—seven as a player and four as a manager—making him the most decorated figure in Turkish league history in this category. On the international stage, he was part of the Türkiye national team that secured the bronze medal at the 2002 FIFA World Cup, and at the club level, he won Europe’s most prestigious trophies, the UEFA Cup and the UEFA Super Cup. As a manager, Buruk led İstanbul Başakşehir to their first-ever Süper Lig title, and subsequently reshaped Turkish football statistics with consecutive championship runs and record-breaking point totals at Galatasaray.
Okan Buruk was born on 19 October 1973 in the Büyükçekmece district of Istanbul. He is the youngest of four children of Ali Buruk and Zehra Buruk, originally from Akçaabat in Trabzon. There is a strong sporting inclination in the family: both of his older brothers were involved in football, with his elder brother Fuat Buruk pursuing a professional playing career followed by assistant coaching. Additionally, his nephews Alican Buruk and Berk Buruk have also pursued professional football careers. Okan Buruk married Nihan Akkuş, former Miss Turkey and 2003 Top Model of the World, on 3 July 2007. The couple had a son, Ali Yiğit, born in 2009. Although their marriage ended in February 2024, they reconciled shortly afterward.
Buruk began his football journey at Karadeniz İdman Ocağı, a local club in Büyükçekmece. At the age of 11 in 1984, he joined the youth academy of Galatasaray. Demonstrating exceptional talent across various youth levels, he captained the Turkish U-21 national team that won the 1992 European Under-21 Championship. On 1 July 1992, he signed his first professional contract with Galatasaray’s senior team, launching his top-level football career. Early in his career, he was sidelined for a period after suffering a broken foot during a cup match against Trabzonspor, but returned strongly after recovery.

Under manager Fatih Terim, Okan Buruk played a key role as a right winger during Galatasaray’s four consecutive Süper Lig titles from the 1996–97 season through the 1999–2000 season. He was a central figure in the squad that won the club’s greatest international triumph: the 1999–2000 UEFA Cup. On 25 August 2000, in the UEFA Super Cup final against Real Madrid in Monaco, which Galatasaray won 2–1, he was named Man of the Match for his outstanding performance across the pitch. His first spell at Galatasaray ended controversially in the final months of the 2000–01 season, when he agreed to join Italian club Inter Milan without informing his club. During a crucial league match against Ankaragücü, he received two yellow cards in the 25th minute and was sent off, drawing criticism for alleged concentration issues. His first Galatasaray tenure ended on 30 June 2001.

In 2001, alongside teammate Emre Belözoğlu, Buruk transferred to Italian Serie A club Inter Milan. He made his Serie A debut on 26 August 2001, coming on as a substitute for Clarence Seedorf against Perugia. One of the most memorable moments of his Italian career was an assist to Mohamed Kallon during the Milan derby against AC Milan on 21 October 2001. He scored his first goal for Inter on 16 November 2002, netting in the 89th minute away at Roma to secure a 2–2 draw. He made his UEFA Champions League debut on 25 September 2002 against Ajax. Under manager Héctor Cúper, Buruk adapted to the team’s tactical discipline and was known for his energetic, relentless style of play. Over three seasons, he appeared in 24 league matches for the Italian club, scoring two goals.

After his contract with Inter Milan expired on 30 June 2004, Buruk returned to Türkiye and signed with Beşiktaş on 1 July 2004. Wearing the black-and-white jersey for two seasons, he contributed to the team’s victory in the 2006 Türkiye Kupası on 3 May 2006. He made 43 league appearances and scored one goal for Beşiktaş.

On 1 July 2006, Buruk returned to his former club Galatasaray by signing a free transfer. During his second stint with the yellow-and-red club, he was part of the squad that won the 2007–08 Süper Lig title, expanding his trophy collection. After his contract expired on 30 June 2008, he left the club and signed a two-year deal with İstanbul Büyükşehir Belediyespor on 1 July 2008.

Buruk concluded his professional playing career at İstanbul Büyükşehir Belediyespor. Over his entire career, he appeared in 434 official matches, scoring 49 goals and providing 69 assists. With Galatasaray, he won one UEFA Cup, one UEFA Super Cup, seven Süper Lig titles, five Türkiye Kupası trophies, and one Türkiye Süper Kupası. He bid farewell to football on 22 May 2010 during a special international match between Türkiye and the Czech Republic at the Red Bull Arena in Leipzig, USA, being substituted in the 9th minute alongside Emre Aşık and celebrating his jubilee.
Okan Buruk represented Türkiye at the U-16, U-18, and U-21 levels before earning 56 caps for the senior national team over an 18-year international career. He made his debut for the Türkiye A Millî Takım on 28 October 1992 in a World Cup qualifier against San Marino.

He represented Türkiye at UEFA Euro 2000, co-hosted by Belgium and the Netherlands. He scored the first goal in Türkiye’s history at the European Championship finals, heading in a goal in the 2–1 loss to Italy during the group stage. In the 2002 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, he was instrumental against Moldova, scoring a hat-trick in both matches. Although limited playing time due to injuries during the 2002 FIFA World Cup finals, he came on in the 76th minute of the historic 3–2 victory over South Korea, which secured Türkiye’s third-place finish and bronze medal. He scored eight goals in his 56 appearances for the national team.
After retiring as a player, Okan Buruk pursued coaching education and served as Administrative Coordinator for the Türkiye national team under Guus Hiddink. When Abdullah Avcı became head coach in November 2011, Buruk was appointed assistant coach. He left this role following Avcı’s resignation in August 2013.

Okan Buruk during his Elazığspor managerial years (AA)
Buruk began his managerial career on 30 October 2013, signing a two-year contract with Elazığspor. He resigned from this position on 2 June 2014 after the team was relegated. Before the 2014–15 season, he signed a three-year deal with Gaziantepspor. After guiding the team to a mid-table finish, disagreements over planning for the following season led to a mutual termination of his contract. On 26 October 2015, he replaced Sergen Yalçın as manager of Sivasspor, but was dismissed on 8 February 2016 after recording only two wins, two draws, and seven losses.
On 1 August 2016, Buruk took charge of Göztepe, then competing in the TFF 1. Lig. Despite averaging 1.58 points per match over 33 games in the promotion campaign, he resigned on 22 March 2017 due to a prolonged form slump.

Six days after leaving Göztepe, on 28 March 2017, he became manager of Süper Lig side Akhisar Belediyespor, keeping the team above the relegation zone and finishing the season in seventh place. The 2017–18 season marked the greatest achievement in the club’s history: under Buruk’s leadership, Akhisarspor defeated Galatasaray 3–1 away after losing 2–1 at home in the Türkiye Kupası semi-final, then beat Fenerbahçe 3–2 in the final with goals from Miguel Lopes, Abdoul Sissoko, and Hélder Barbosa to win the cup.
This triumph earned the club direct qualification to the UEFA Europa League group stage. However, disagreements over transfer budgets and contract terms led to his departure on 14 June 2018. On 19 September 2018, he took over as manager of Çaykur Rizespor, guiding the team away from relegation with a strong second-half performance, and resigned on 28 May 2019 citing personal reasons.
On 11 June 2019, Okan Buruk was appointed manager of İstanbul Başakşehir following Abdullah Avcı’s move to Beşiktaş. In his early days, he attempted to implement the team’s traditional 4–2–3–1 or 4–3–3 formations, which resulted in early setbacks including elimination by Olympiakos in the UEFA Champions League qualifiers and defeats to Yeni Malatyaspor and Fenerbahçe in the league. However, he quickly adapted, strengthening the defensive structure with players such as Mert Günok, Mahmut Tekdemir, Gaël Clichy, Júnior Caiçara, and İrfan Can Kahveci, and introducing rotation among center-backs Alexandru Epureanu, Martin Škrtel, and Carlos Ponck.

Okan Buruk during his Başakşehir managerial years (AA)
In the 2019–20 season, Başakşehir topped their UEFA Europa League group featuring Roma, Borussia Mönchengladbach, and Wolfsberger AC. In the Round of 32, they defeated Sporting CP 4–1 in the second leg at home after a 3–1 away loss, achieving a historic first for the club. In the Round of 16, they won the first leg 1–0 against Copenhagen, but were eliminated after a 3–0 defeat in the rescheduled second leg due to the pandemic.
In the Süper Lig, Buruk led Başakşehir to their first-ever league title with 69 points, making them the sixth club in Türkiye to win the championship and the fourth from Istanbul. In the 2020–21 season, he guided the team to a 2–1 home win over Manchester United in the UEFA Champions League group stage, with goals from Demba Ba and Edin Višća. However, poor league results led to his departure from the club on 29 January 2021 by mutual agreement.
Okan Buruk returned to Galatasaray, the club where he became a legend as a player, as manager on 22 June 2022, initially signing a two-year contract.

To overcome the poor performance of the previous season, Buruk strengthened the squad with stars such as Mauro Icardi, Lucas Torreira, Dries Mertens, Sergio Oliveira, and Abdülkerim Bardakcı. Under his leadership, Galatasaray won 14 consecutive Süper Lig matches, breaking the club’s all-time winning streak record. They finished the season as champions with 83 goals scored and only 27 conceded, boasting the league’s best attack and defense, eight points ahead of nearest rivals Fenerbahçe.
The squad was further reinforced with the signings of Davinson Sánchez, Kerem Demirbay, Wilfried Zaha, and Hakim Ziyech. In the UEFA Champions League, Galatasaray competed in a group with Bayern Munich, Copenhagen, and Manchester United. They defeated Manchester United 3–2 at Old Trafford and drew 3–3 at home, finishing third in the group and qualifying for the UEFA Europa League. In the Europa League play-off round, they won the first leg 3–2 at home against Sparta Prague but lost 4–1 away and were eliminated. In April 2024, Galatasaray were awarded the postponed 2023 Türkiye Süper Kupası final in Şanlıurfa after Fenerbahçe withdrew from the match; Galatasaray were declared 3–0 winners by default (Mauro Icardi’s goal, scored in the 50th second of the match, became historic). Although Galatasaray’s title celebration was delayed after a 1–0 home defeat to Fenerbahçe in the 37th week of the league, they clinched their second consecutive title on 26 May 2024 by defeating Konyaspor. That season, Galatasaray amassed 102 points, breaking the Süper Lig’s all-time points record, and set a new record with 17 consecutive wins.

Okan Buruk as Galatasaray manager in 2024 (AA)
On 7 June 2024, Okan Buruk extended his contract with Galatasaray for another two years. The season began with a shaky start after a 5–0 defeat to Beşiktaş in the Türkiye Süper Kupası on 3 August. They were eliminated from the UEFA Champions League play-off round after losing both legs to Young Boys (3–2 and 1–0). However, Buruk stabilized the team and achieved a 3–1 away victory over Fenerbahçe, managed by José Mourinho, on 21 September 2024. In the Süper Lig, Galatasaray set a new record with 15 consecutive away wins. In the second half of the season, during the Türkiye Kupası quarter-final match against Fenerbahçe at Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium on 2 April 2025, which Galatasaray lost 2–1, the incident where Mourinho grabbed Buruk’s nose became a major story in the sports media. Although their unbeaten league run ended with the Beşiktaş defeat, Buruk secured the Türkiye Kupası on 14 May 2025 by defeating Trabzonspor 3–0 in the final, and then clinched their 25th overall and third consecutive Süper Lig title on 18 May 2025 with a win over Kayserispor, two weeks before the season ended. He became the first manager in Galatasaray’s history to earn the club’s fifth star.
Following Buruk’s persistent recommendation, Galatasaray signed Victor Osimhen for a club-record €75 million at the start of the season. Additional reinforcements included Gabriel Sara, Roland Sallai, Mario Lemina, and Eren Elmalı. In the UEFA Champions League group stage, Galatasaray defeated Liverpool 2–1 at home and Ajax 3–0 away, lost 1–0 to Union Saint-Gilloise, and drew 1–1 with Atlético Madrid, qualifying for the Round of 16 for the first time since the 2013–14 season. In the Round of 16 play-off, they defeated Juventus 5–2 at home and advanced despite a 3–2 away loss.

In the Süper Lig, a 3–0 victory over Fenerbahçe at RAMS Park on 27 April 2026 in the 31st-week derby increased their point advantage to seven, bringing them a significant step closer to their fourth consecutive title. With this match, Buruk reached his 120th Süper Lig game as Galatasaray manager and secured his 100th win against Göztepe, setting a new record as the fastest manager in Galatasaray history to reach 100 wins, with an average of 2.60 points per match. After the Fenerbahçe match, Buruk emphasized in his post-match comments that his team maintained physical and mental superiority throughout, noting that the missed penalty was a turning point, but reminded everyone: “We are not champions yet, nothing is over,” maintaining a cautious tone. Galatasaray’s board announced in February 2026 that a final decision regarding Buruk, whose contract expires in June 2026, would be made at the end of the season.
Okan Buruk employs a modern football system based on high-tempo pressing and rapid offensive transitions. He predominantly favors the 4–2–3–1 formation, placing strong emphasis on full-back overlaps, central midfield dynamism, and wing organization. Alongside the defensive structures he built at Başakşehir and Galatasaray, his expertise in player relationships and crisis management is regarded as a fundamental key to his success.
With his unique collection of trophies across his playing and managerial career, Okan Buruk stands as the most decorated figure in Turkish sports history.
