Opening of the First Road Bridge Between Russia and North Korea for Transportation

The first direct road bridge between Russia and North Korea was opened on 7 September 2026 across the Tumen River, which forms the shared border between the two countries. Constructed with a length of approximately one kilometre and two lanes, the bridge connects Khasan in Russia’s Primorye region with the Rason area on the North Korean side. Prior to its opening, transportation between the two countries was primarily facilitated through rail and air links. It has been announced that the bridge can serve up to 300 vehicles per day and will be integrated into Russia’s federal highway network.

Construction of the bridge began in April 2025 following an agreement reached during Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to North Korea in 2024. The project took approximately 495 days to complete. The bridge has been named after Soviet soldier Yakov Novichenko, who is said to have protected North Korea’s founding leader Kim Il Sung during an attack in 1946. The bridge is initially intended for freight transport, with plans to fully open it to passenger traffic by the end of 2026. The North Korean government has stated that the connection will be used for personnel mobility, tourism, and trade.

Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin and North Korean Prime Minister Pak Thae-song participated in the opening ceremony via video link. Mishustin described the bridge as a new symbol of friendship between the two nations and noted that expanding cross-border transportation infrastructure is expected to enhance cooperation in trade, economics, science, technology, and culture. Pak stated that the bridge would inject new momentum into bilateral cooperation.

The opening of the bridge occurs amid a rapid deepening of political, economic, and military ties between Russia and North Korea, particularly since the start of the Russia-Ukraine War in 2022. During Putin’s visit to Pyongyang in 2024, the two countries signed a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Agreement, which includes provisions for mutual assistance if either party is subjected to armed attack. Since 2024, North Korea has also deployed thousands of troops to Russia’s Kursk region; Ukraine and Western countries have reported that Pyongyang has supplied Russia with artillery shells, missiles, and other military equipment.

The new road connection is expected to increase logistical capacity between the two countries beyond trade and tourism. However, the Ukrainian research group Truth Hounds has suggested that the bridge could be used to transport North Korean military personnel and workers to Russia and to transfer Russian resources and technology to North Korea. Russia and North Korea, however, have defined the bridge as an infrastructure project primarily aimed at enhancing economic, cultural, and humanitarian relations.
