Located within the borders of Pertek district in Tunceli Province, Türkiye, Pertek Castle stands by the banks of the Murat River and has historically hosted various civilizations. Although its exact construction date remains uncertain, the castle underwent restoration during the Ottoman period. Today, due to the rising waters of the Keban Dam Lake, it appears as an island structure. The castle's integration with the natural landscape makes it notable both historically and as a tourist attraction.

Location and Physical Features

Pertek Castle is located to the south of the district center, built on a hill along the banks of the Murat River. Following the construction of the Keban Dam in the 20th century, the surrounding area was submerged, and the castle now stands on an island. Its position along the ferry route between Elazığ and Pertek facilitates access for visitors. In addition to the ferry, the castle can also be reached by fishing boats in approximately 10–15 minutes.

Architectural Structure and Features

Pertek Castle is a defensive structure consisting of two concentric walls. Between these walls are remnants of various structures. Particularly notable on the southern façade are red bricks embedded among the dressed stones, along with scattered blue tiles. Within the castle, a cistern and the remains of different structures can also be found.

Historical Background and Restorations

Although the exact construction date of Pertek Castle is not definitively known, records confirm that it underwent restoration during the Ottoman period. According to historical sources, the castle was also repaired at one point by Khalid ibn al-Walid. During this restoration, it is reported that the statue of Karakuş (Portok in Mongolian), once located within the castle, was removed and replaced with an inscription in Arabic. The area where the castle stands is also believed to be the site of the old city of Pertek.

Social and Cultural Significance

Today, Pertek Castle is regarded as one of the symbolic landmarks of Tunceli Province and especially of the Pertek district. Its location amid the waters of the Keban Dam Lake enhances its appeal as a natural attraction. Walking paths designated for visitors and the surrounding natural landscape—featuring diverse flora and bird species—further boost its touristic potential. Both locals and tourists consider the castle an essential element of the region’s historical identity.
