Rebuilt in Rabat and opened for service in 2025, the Prens Moulay Abdellah Stadyumu has become one of the key examples of Morocco’s transformation in its sports infrastructure. Located in the capital, this stadium not only hosts football matches but also serves as a strategic venue for international events. Designed with a modern architectural approach advanced technological infrastructure and a commitment to sustainability, the structure was built on the site of the former stadium.

History and Reconstruction Process

The original Prens Moulay Abdellah Stadyumu, first opened in 1983, hosted numerous national and international sporting events for decades. Major events such as the Africa Cup of Nations (1988), the FIFA Club World Cup (2014 2022) and Diamond League athletics competitions were held here. However as the facility fell behind international standards it was completely demolished in 2023 and construction of a new stadium began the same year. The renovation process lasted approximately two years and was recorded by the Guinness World Records as one of the fastest stadiums ever built.

Architectural Design and Structural Features

The new stadium was designed in collaboration between the Moroccan architectural firm Orange Atelier and the international stadium design firm Populous. The exterior façade draws inspiration from traditional Moroccan aesthetics particularly the shape of date palm leaves and is clad with a parametric LED façade composed of 19 200 champagne-colored aluminum triangles. The entire structure covers an area of 100 000 square meters.

The stadium’s roof system is designed to fully cover the stands with a 360-degree wind protection feature. Special attention was given to acoustic performance and the stands were constructed as close as possible to the pitch. The south stand consists of two levels and is designed as the “Kop stand” with a capacity of 23 000 spectators.

Capacity and Facilities

The stadium has a total capacity of 68 700 spectators making it the second largest stadium in Morocco. Inside the facility there are 110 private boxes five separate VIP lounges and a dedicated accommodation area for 5 400 guests. Additionally ample space has been allocated for persons with disabilities.

The venue is equipped with a hybrid natural-synthetic turf surface which represents a first for the African continent while meeting FIFA standards for drainage and grass technology. Two large LED screens are installed at each of the four corners of the stadium.

Technological Infrastructure and Sustainability

The stadium integrates advanced technological solutions including intelligent crowd management systems high-end audio systems and high-resolution LED panels. Environmental sustainability has been prioritized through the incorporation of solar energy panels and water recycling systems.

Sports Complex and Accessibility

The stadium is part of the Prens Moulay Abdellah Sports Complex which integrates multiple facilities. Other components of the complex include the 21 000-seat Stade Olympique de Rabat a 10 000-seat indoor sports hall (Salle Moulay Abdellah) an Olympic-sized swimming pool and a five-level underground parking facility with capacity for 5 200 vehicles.

The stadium is located in the southwest of Rabat near the railway line and the main road leading to Casablanca. Its proximity to the city’s main bus terminal and the ongoing construction of the Hay Riad high-speed train station ensure excellent transportation access.

Role in International Events

The new stadium officially opened on 5 September 2025 with a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier match between Morocco and Niger. Morocco won the match 5–0 becoming the first African nation to qualify for the World Cup through this fixture.

The stadium will host numerous matches during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations including the opening match quarterfinal semifinal and final. It has also been confirmed as one of the venues for a semifinal match during the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

Users and Functions

The primary user of the new stadium is AS FAR one of Morocco’s leading football clubs. It also regularly hosts matches of the Moroccan national football team. The facility is not limited to football matches but is also designed to accommodate concerts public events and cultural activities.
