Ratatouille is a feature-length animated film produced jointly by Walt Disney Pictures and Pixar Animation Studios, directed by Brad Bird and released in 2007. The film centers on Remy, a rat distinguished by his passion for cooking and innate extraordinary sense of smell, who dreams of becoming a chef in a renowned restaurant in Paris. Originally produced in English, the film was released in Türkiye on 24 August 2007 under the title Ratatuy.

Remy is a member of a rat family living outside Paris. While foraging for food among garbage with his family, Remy discovers he possesses an extraordinary sense of smell and taste. While tasked with identifying poisonous food, he develops a deep fascination with human cuisine. His greatest idol is the famous chef Auguste Gusteau, known for the motto “Anyone can cook.”

One day, Remy unexpectedly falls into Paris’s sewer system and finds himself beneath Gusteau’s renowned restaurant. There he encounters Alfredo Linguini, a young kitchen apprentice. Remy helps Linguini become a skilled chef by secretly controlling his movements from afar, and together they achieve remarkable success. This unusual partnership initiates a new era in the kitchen and challenges prejudices between humans and rats.

Brad Bird directed the film, with Jan Pinkava and Jim Capobianco contributing to the screenplay. Developed at Pixar Studios, the film stands out for its high level of realism in character animation. To better observe the movements of rats, animators kept live rats in the studio for over a year. This enabled natural modeling of fur, nose, tail, and paw movements.

The film’s score was composed by Michael Giacchino. Among his French-inspired musical pieces, the most prominent is the song “Le Festin,” performed by Camille. The film’s aspect ratio is 2.39:1, and it uses Dolby Atmos and SDDS sound systems.

With a rating of 8.1 on IMDb, Ratatouille has won 68 awards, including one Oscar, and received 42 nominations across various categories. At the Academy Awards, it won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature and was nominated for Best Original Screenplay, Best Original Score, and Best Sound Editing.

Ratatouille employed Pixar’s most advanced lighting, surface texture, and motion algorithms up to that point. The atmosphere of Paris was meticulously modeled, and steam, water, and metal reflections in the kitchen were designed with photorealistic precision. The film is regarded as one of the first major productions in animation history to realistically depict culinary culture.
