The Sargı Yeri Martyrs' Cemetery is located in the area where Zığındere Sargı Yeri, one of the medical aid stations set up behind the front lines during the 1915 Gallipoli land battles, was established. On June 28, 1915, during and after the Zığındere attack on the Seddülbahir front, a large number of Ottoman soldiers were gathered here for treatment, but due to the high volume of casualties and severe injuries, many soldiers lost their lives at this location.

Geographical Location and Structural Features

The martyrdom is located within the boundaries of the Gallipoli Peninsula Historical National Park, northeast of Alçıtepe Village. Located approximately 300 meters above sea level, this area was chosen for the provision of medical services due to its safe and accessible location behind the front lines at the time. Today, the martyrdom site is preserved as a memorial area open to visitors, featuring well-maintained walking paths, informational panels, and symbolic gravestones.

The Sargı Yeri Martyrs' Cemetery is not merely a burial ground but also a place of memory representing the conditions of medical services behind the front lines during the Battle of Gallipoli. The majority of the soldiers who fell here were severely wounded and brought for treatment. It is estimated that over 10,000 unnamed martyrs are buried at the site.

Restoration and Conservation Work

The Sargı Yeri Martyrs' Cemetery was redesigned as part of a project carried out by the Çanakkale Historical Site Authority in the 2000s, and its surroundings were enhanced with landscaping. These works, carried out to physically protect the area and reflect its historical fabric, have ensured that the martyrs' cemetery can be visited in a sustainable manner. Information panels and symbolic gravestones have been placed based on scientific data to explain the historical importance of the area to visitors.
