Sarıkamış Ski Center

Sarıkamış Ski Center is located in the Eastern Anatolia Region of Türkiye, on Çamurlu Mountain in the southeastern part of Sarıkamış district, Kars province. It is situated 55 km from the city center of Kars and approximately 1 km from the district center of Sarıkamış. The ski area is positioned on a plateau at elevations ranging from 2100 to 2634 meters, surrounded by pine forests. The region lies within the continental climate zone, with the prevailing wind direction being southwest.

The most distinctive feature of Sarıkamış Ski Center is its snow structure, which exhibits crystal snow characteristics typically found only in the Alps. This type of snow, with its low humidity and granular texture, provides ideal conditions for skiing. The ski runs are surrounded by pine forests, which reduce wind impact, while the natural topography of the area minimizes avalanche risk.

The ski season typically runs from December 10 to April 10, depending on climatic conditions, with snow depth varying between 8 and 120 cm. Average temperatures hover around 3–4 °C, and a significant portion of the year is sunny. The Sarıkamış area also offers infrastructure suitable for activities such as cross-country skiing, ski safaris, sledding, and snowshoeing, in addition to alpine and Nordic skiing. Sarıkamış Ski Center features a total of 25 kilometers of ski runs distributed across the Bayraktepe and Karanlıkdere areas. The runs are classified by difficulty level using blue (easy), red (intermediate), and black (advanced) markings. The ski center also includes additional areas such as a snowpark and a half-pipe. The lift system consists of four cable lines with a combined hourly capacity of approximately 5600 passengers. The lift lines range in length from 692 to 1850 meters.

Sarıkamış Ski Center offers accommodation in five-star, four-star, and three-star hotels licensed for tourism, as well as pensions and apartment hotels. A total of 18 facilities provide lodging services. Ski instruction is available in the area, and ski equipment can be rented. Health, safety, and first aid services are provided on-site. The nearest hospital is located in the Sarıkamış district center.

Sarıkamış Ski Center is located 50 km from Kars Airport. Bus services connect the airport to the ski center. Access from the Sarıkamış district center to the ski center is available via private vehicles.

Sarıkamış is notable not only as a ski center but also as a region rich in historical and cultural heritage. Following the Ottoman-Russian War, the area remained under Russian occupation for approximately 40 years. During this period, the 116-year-old Katerina Av Cottage was built under the orders of Russian Tsar Nicholas II. Constructed using Baltic architectural techniques without nails, the cottage is an important structure for cultural tourism.

Every year during the first week of January, the Sarıkamış Martyrs Commemoration Program is held to honor Ottoman soldiers who perished from freezing during the Sarıkamış Campaign of 1914–1915. Additionally, various sports and entertainment activities are organized during the Kar Festival, held in February.

To enhance year-round usability of Sarıkamış Ski Center, various infrastructure projects are underway. Under the “Increasing the Capacity of Sarıkamış Ski Center” project, infrastructure is being developed for activities such as zipline, snow tubing, summer-winter bike trails, giant swings, and mountain coasters. The project has a budget of 10 million Turkish Lira and a planned duration of 12 months. The goal is to contribute to four-season tourism and extend visitors’ length of stay.
