Seven Lives (Film)

Seven Pounds (original title: Seven Pounds) is a 2008 American drama film directed by Gabriele Muccino. The film centers on a man burdened by the moral weight of a tragic accident he caused in the past, and his plan to help seven strangers whose lives he intends to change. The narrative unfolds through a non-linear structure, keeping the protagonist’s motivations and ultimate purpose a mystery until the finale, blending drama with elements of suspense.

Plot

The film’s protagonist, Tim Thomas (Will Smith), conceals his true identity by assuming the identity of his brother Ben Thomas, an employee of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). In the past, a traffic accident caused by his own negligence resulted in the deaths of seven people, including his fiancée. Overwhelmed by guilt, he devises a plan for redemption: to find seven individuals in need whom he believes to be “good people” and give them life-changing gifts.

Tim uses his IRS identity to investigate the financial and personal circumstances of potential candidates. His list includes a diverse group of individuals: Emily Posa (Rosario Dawson), who needs a heart transplant; Ezra Turner (Woody Harrelson), a blind telemarketer who is visually impaired; and a child services worker and hockey coach awaiting a bone marrow transplant, among others. As Tim implements his plan step by step, he meets each candidate personally to determine whether they truly deserve his help.

However, the process becomes complicated when he meets Emily Posa, the heart patient, and falls in love with her. Initially motivated solely by the desire to help, Tim begins to hesitate about carrying out his plan due to the emotional bond he forms with Emily. The film’s later scenes gradually reveal Tim’s inner conflicts and the secret behind his redemption scheme, ultimately exposing his final intention: to end his own life and donate his organs and possessions to the seven individuals he has chosen.

Cast

Will Smith portrays the lead character Tim Thomas. Rosario Dawson plays Emily Posa, the heart patient, and Woody Harrelson portrays Ezra Turner, the visually impaired telemarketer. The cast also includes Barry Pepper as Dan Morris, Tim’s friend.
