Shandong Youdao Chemical Plant Explosion (2025)

The Shandong Youdao Chemical Factory Explosion was an industrial explosion that occurred on 27 May 2025 at a chemical facility in the city of Gaomi, located in Shandong province in eastern China. As a result of the incident, five people lost their lives, six were reported missing, and nineteen were injured.

Course of the Incident

The explosion occurred at approximately 11:57 local time on Tuesday, 27 May 2025, in a workshop owned by Gaomi Youdao Chemical Co. Ltd. in Gaomi city, under the jurisdiction of Weifang in Shandong province. Following the explosion, a fire erupted, filling the sky with thick black and gray smoke. The blast shattered windows in numerous buildings and caused the collapse of several multi-story structures. Seismic shocks were felt several kilometers away from the site.

Casualties and Injuries

Official statements confirmed that five people died, six were missing, and nineteen were injured as a result of the explosion. Most of the injured sustained minor wounds. Search and rescue operations to locate the missing persons were launched immediately after the incident.

Response and Official Action

A total of 232 emergency personnel and 55 vehicles were deployed to the site for response efforts. A special commission appointed by China’s Ministry of Emergency Management, along with additional support units, was also dispatched to the location. Emergency response mechanisms were simultaneously activated at provincial, county, and municipal levels by Shandong’s regional and local authorities, ensuring crisis management in areas including identification of the missing, treatment of the injured, environmental safety, and public information dissemination.

Facility Structure and History

The facility where the explosion occurred belongs to Gaomi Youdao Chemical Co. Ltd., which produces pesticides and pharmaceutical chemicals. Established in 2019 within the Gaomi Renhe Chemical Industrial Park, the site covers an area of more than 47 hectares. Over 300 people work at the factory. The facility received two safety violation warnings during 2024 but was cited as a model example in September of the same year by the Weifang Emergency Management Bureau for its internal risk management practices.

Environmental Impact and Local Repercussions

Black and orange smoke plumes from the explosion lingered over the region for an extended period. Environmental monitoring teams were dispatched by local authorities to assess air pollution levels at the site. As of 28 May, the results of air quality measurements had not been made public.

Some residential buildings and commercial premises in Gaomi suffered severe damage due to the explosion. Residents reported roof collapses and shattered windows in their homes during the blast. One shopkeeper located 500 meters from the explosion site sustained minor injuries, while another family reportedly sent their children to a safer location for security reasons.
