Sinop University (SNÜ)

Sinop University (SNÜ) is a public university established on 17 May 2007 by Law No. 5662. The institution is located in the province of Sinop. It conducts educational, teaching and research activities through faculties, institutes, colleges, vocational colleges and application and research centers.

History

The official establishment of Sinop University dates to 2007. The institution was formed through the consolidation of several academic units originally established under the 19 May University. It was formally established by a law published in the Official Gazette on 29 May 2007. Following its establishment, new academic units were added to expand the university’s academic structure.

Campuses

The main campus of the university is the 15 July Campus located in the center of Sinop. This campus houses administrative offices, some academic units and social facilities. In addition to the main campus, buildings belonging to vocational colleges and other academic units are located in various districts and in the center of Sinop.

Student Profile

Approximately 14,542 students at Sinop University are enrolled in associate, undergraduate and graduate programs.^【1】 Admissions are conducted through Turkey’s centralized examination systems (Higher Education Institutions Examination-YKS and other relevant exams). The student body includes students from various regions of Türkiye.

Departments

Sinop University offers numerous academic programs at the associate and undergraduate levels. These programs are organized under faculties and vocational colleges.

Undergraduate Programs

Undergraduate education is delivered through four-year (eight-semester) programs within faculties:

Boyabat Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences: Includes departments of Real Estate Development and Management, Health Management, Political Science and Public Administration, and International Trade and Business.

Faculty of Education: Offers programs in Science Teaching, Primary Mathematics Teaching, English Teaching, Pre-School Teaching, Special Education Teaching, Guidance and Psychological Counseling, Classroom Teaching, Social Studies Teaching and Turkish Language Teaching.

Faculty of Science and Letters: Houses departments of Archaeology, Biology, Mathematics, Sociology, History, Turkish Language and Literature, and Data Science and Analytics.

Faculty of Engineering and Architecture: Offers programs in Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Nuclear Energy Engineering (including a program for citizens of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus).

Faculty of Health Sciences: Comprises departments of Child Development, Midwifery, Nursing, Occupational Health and Safety, and Social Work.

Faculty of Tourism: Offers undergraduate programs in Gastronomy and Culinary Arts, Recreation Management and Tourism Guiding.

Other Faculties: The Faculty of Theology (Theology and Theology (M.T.O.K.) programs), Faculty of Sports Sciences (Sports Management) and Faculty of Aquatic Products (Aquatic Products Engineering) offer additional undergraduate programs.

Associate Degree Programs

Associate degree education is typically delivered through two-year (four-semester) programs under the umbrella of Vocational Colleges (MYO):

School of Health Services: Offers programs in Anesthesia, Environmental Health, Dialysis, Medical Documentation and Secretarial Services, Medical Laboratory Techniques and Elderly Care.

Vocational College (Center): Offers programs in Computer Programming, Big Data Analysis, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Accounting and Tax Applications, Nuclear Technology and Radiation Safety, Game Development and Programming, and Underwater Technology.

Gerze Vocational College: Offers programs in Culinary Arts, Banking and Insurance, Printing and Publishing Technologies, Computer Programming (with distance learning option), Maritime and Port Management, Graphic Design, Fashion Design, Bus Driving, Radio and Television Programming, Health Information Systems Technology, Textile Technology and Tourism and Hotel Management.

Ayancık Vocational College: Offers programs in Child Development, Foreign Trade, Interior Design, Internet and Network Technologies, Control and Automation Technology, Logistics and Forestry and Forest Products.

Boyabat Vocational College: Offers programs in Geographic Information Systems, Real Estate Management, Cartography and Cadastre, Construction Technology, Occupational Health and Safety, Laboratory Technology, Architectural Restoration and Civil Defense and Firefighting.

Durağan Vocational College: Offers programs in Pharmacy Services and First Aid and Emergency Care.

Türkeli Vocational College: Offers programs in Emergency and Disaster Management, Child Protection and Care Services, and Home-Based Patient Care.

International Activities

Sinop University participates in international student and staff mobility programs as part of its internationalization efforts. Its primary international activity is the Erasmus+ Exchange Program. Through this program, students and staff have the opportunity to study or complete internships at partner universities in Europe. The university manages international exchange processes and develops academic collaborations through its International Relations Office and relevant units.

Student Life

Sinop University provides opportunities to support students’ social and cultural development alongside their academic growth. Various events and workshops are organized through student clubs. Additionally, the campus student life center includes cafes, cinemas, sports facilities and club rooms where students can socialize and participate in cultural activities.

Awards and Achievements

Sinop University has achieved numerous national and international successes in academic, scientific and sporting fields:

• Academic Performance Awards: At the Academic Performance Awards Ceremony held on the occasion of the university’s 17th anniversary, awards were presented to academics who contributed to national and international recognition. Seven categories of awards were given:

Article Award, Patent/Useful Model Award, Project Award, TÜBA/TÜBİTAK/YÖK Award, Most Influential Scientist Award, Integrated Academic Performance Award, Academic Incentive Award.^【2】

• TÜBA and TÜBİTAK Science Awards: At the 100th Anniversary TÜBA and TÜBİTAK Science Awards Ceremony held under the auspices of the Presidency, faculty members Assoc. Prof. Dr. Cenk Demir and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Süleyman Tekir were awarded in the category of “Scientific Authored Works”.^【3】
• Web of Science Publication Success: According to 2021 Web of Science data, the university outperformed the national average in quality scientific publication activity and ranked first in eight categories within the Black Sea Region. It achieved top position in citation indicators such as Citation Impact, Average Percentile and JNCI. Additionally, based on its scientific publications between 2017 and 2021, it achieved above national and global averages in CNCI and JNCI citation impact scores.^【4】
• URAP World Ranking: In the world university ranking published by URAP (University Ranking by Academic Performance), affiliated with the Middle East Technical University Institute of Information Technology, Sinop University rose 168 places in the 2018–2019 academic year and entered the top 2500 universities worldwide.^【5】
• Times Higher Education (THE) World Ranking: In the 2026 THE World University Rankings, Sinop University entered the ranking in its first application in the 1501+ band. It ranked among the top institutions in Türkiye in the category of research quality.^【6】
• Disability-Inclusive University Awards (YÖK): Under the “2021 Disability-Inclusive University Awards” organized by the Council of Higher Education, the Faculty of Theology, Vocational College and Central Library received the Orange Flag award in the category of “Physical Accessibility”.^【7】
• Gastronomy Achievement: At the second stage of the New Generation Lakerda Competition of the fifth Lakerda Festival, a student from the Gastronomy and Culinary Arts Department of the Faculty of Tourism won first prize.^【8】
