Şirince Village

Şirince is a neighborhood within the district of Selçuk in İzmir Province. It is distinguished by its historical, cultural, and natural richness. Located in a mountainous area approximately eight kilometers from the center of Selçuk, it is surrounded by olive trees and features well-preserved traditional stone architecture.

Şirince’s former name was Kirkince, and it was renamed Şirince in 1926. In the 19th century, it was a town with a substantial Greek population. Following the 1923 population exchange between Türkiye and Greece, the Greek population departed and was replaced by Turkish migrants from the Kavala region. In 1941, Şirince Municipality was dissolved and the settlement was downgraded to village status.

Şirince is situated in a mountainous region to the east of the Selçuk district. Access to Şirince is provided by minibuses and private vehicles from Selçuk. Alternative transportation routes have been developed in the area.

Şirince is a culturally significant settlement known for its stone houses, narrow streets, and historic churches. The Church of St. Demetrius and the Church of John the Baptist are among the main historic structures in the village. It was officially registered as an urban conservation area in 2007.

Tourism is a major economic activity in the village. Since 2002, the number of accommodation facilities has increased by approximately 500 percent. Tourists favor local products, natural beauty, and regional cuisine.

According to data from the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK), the population of Şirince Neighborhood was 499 as of 2022. The population has fluctuated over time due to tourism activity and migration.
