Solo Leveling (Series)

Solo Leveling is an action anime series that follows the story of hunters who battle monsters in dungeons that suddenly appear in the modern world. The series is adapted from the web novel of the same name by South Korean author Chugong. Originally published in 2016, the novel was later adapted into a webtoon illustrated by Dubu (Jang Sung-rak). The anime adaptation was produced by A-1 Pictures in 2024.

Solo Leveling begins with the sudden appearance of dimensional gateways known as “Gates” within the modern world. These gates connect human society to dungeons filled with monsters. As creatures emerge from the dungeons and threaten humanity, certain individuals gain special powers. These individuals are known as Hunters.

Hunters are ranked by power level: E, D, C, B, A, and the highest tier, S.

The protagonist of the series is Sung Jin-Woo, known as the weakest Hunter in the world—a E-Rank Hunter. To survive, he enters low-level dungeons and often barely escapes death.

One day, during a mysterious mission known as a Double Dungeon, he is severely injured and nearly the entire team is wiped out. After this event, Jin-Woo is chosen by a mysterious “System” invisible to everyone else.

The first season of Solo Leveling premiered at the beginning of 2024 and consists of 12 episodes. The story begins with Sung Jin-Woo, known as “The Weakest Hunter,” experiencing a tragic yet fate-altering event during a low-level dungeon raid. After surviving the Double Dungeon incident as the sole survivor, he gains access to a mysterious “System” interface visible only to him. In this season, Jin-Woo’s progression—like a video game character—leveling up, undergoing physical transformation, and discovering hidden abilities is explored. The season’s climax features Jin-Woo’s ascension to the “Shadow Monarch” class and his first use of the iconic “Arise” command.

The second season, released at the beginning of 2025, expands the story to a much grander scale. Jin-Woo no longer focuses solely on increasing his own power but dedicates himself to building and commanding his own shadow army. In this season, Jin-Woo’s existence becomes perceived as either a threat or a hope by other powerful Hunters and guilds across the world. The narrative destabilizes the power balance among S-Rank Hunters and sets the stage for iconic, high-risk incursions such as those on Jeju Island. The survival struggle of the first season gives way to an epic fantasy in which Jin-Woo seeks answers to why the mysterious System chose him and pushes the boundaries of his true power.

Each dungeon ends with a “Boss.” If a dungeon is not cleared within its time limit, the creatures within escape into the world (Dungeon Break).
