Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is an action-adventure film released in 2022 by Paramount Pictures and directed by Jeff Fowler. It serves as the sequel to the 2020 film Sonic the Hedgehog. The screenplay was written by Pat Casey, Josh Miller, and John Whittington. This adaptation is based on the Sonic the Hedgehog video game series developed by Sega. The film follows Sonic the Hedgehog as he attempts to establish his identity as a superhero in the town of Green Hills, after the events of the first film. Robotnik’s goal is to seize the Master Emerald, a relic possessing the power to control the universe. In response to this threat, Sonic gains a new ally named Tails and embarks on an adventurous journey to preserve the balance of the universe.

The film’s central themes include friendship, sacrifice, self-confidence, the struggle between good and evil, and belonging. Concepts such as family, loyalty, and personal responsibility are explored primarily through character relationships. Sonic’s use of his superpowers underscores the idea that power must be accompanied by responsibility.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 achieved significant box office success worldwide. The film earned over $70 million in its opening week in North America, surpassing the commercial performance of its predecessor. Globally, it generated over $400 million in revenue. It is recognized as one of the highest-grossing video game adaptations of all time.

The film was produced by Neal H. Moritz, Toby Ascher, Toru Nakahara, and Hitoshi Okuno. Visual effects were developed using extensive digital modeling and motion capture techniques to ensure seamless integration of CGI characters such as Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles into the live-action environment. The score was composed by Junkie XL (Tom Holkenborg), and principal photography took place in various locations including Vancouver and Hawaii.
