Sultanhisar Strawberry

Sultanhisar strawberry is a local strawberry variety unique to the Sultanhisar district of Aydın Province, distinguished by its aroma, taste, and texture. It has been officially registered with geographical indication status by the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office and is legally protected under the geographical indication product protection system.

Distinctive Characteristics

The Sultanhisar Strawberry belongs to the hybrid species Fragaria x ananassa Duch. It produces red-colored fruits with a pleasant aroma and excellent flavor. Cultivation in Sultanhisar has been practiced since 1973. The region’s unique soil structure and microclimate conditions are decisive factors in product quality. Summer and autumn plantings are carried out, with practices such as solarization, mulching, and high tunnels employed in cultivation. Harvesting, packaging, and cold chain criteria are also specified in the registration document.

Geographical Indication Registration

The product was registered with geographical indication status by the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office on 30 November 2020. This registration, documented under number 613, was carried out by the Sultanhisar Chamber of Agriculture. Classified under the category “Processed and unprocessed fruits, vegetables and mushrooms,” the Sultanhisar Strawberry is geographically directly linked to the Sultanhisar region within the boundaries of Aydın Province.

Geographical indication registration ensures the product’s regional identity and legal protection of its name. This enhances consumer confidence and positions the Sultanhisar Strawberry competitively in the market.

Monitoring

Monitoring of the product is coordinated by the Sultanhisar Chamber of Agriculture, with contributions from Adnan Menderes University and the Sultanhisar District Governorship. Inspections cover production areas, cultivation techniques, product quality, and compliance with geographical origin requirements. Inspection reports are prepared at regular intervals and submitted to competent authorities to ensure the continued compliance of the product with geographical indication conditions.

Regional Development and Export

Sultanhisar is one of Türkiye’s most important strawberry production centers. Annual production in the district approaches 50,000 tons, approximately 60 percent of which is exported. Major export markets include Russia, Romania, Ukraine, Middle Eastern countries, and Iran.
