TEKNOFEST Hyperloop Development Competition

TEKNOFEST Hyperloop The Development Competition is a technology contest organized by TÜBİTAK within the framework of Türkiye’s national technology vision, with support from various public stakeholders and private sector partners led by TCDD. First held in 2022, this competition targets students at the undergraduate level with the aim of developing Hyperloop systems among next-generation transportation technologies, cultivating skilled human resources in this field, and increasing technological awareness.

Objective and Vision of the Competition

The primary objective of the competition is to encourage the development of low-friction, high-speed and environmentally friendly Hyperloop transportation technologies within the country, to generate innovative and practical solutions for the subsystems of these systems, and to enhance university students’ participation in R&D activities to contribute to next-generation transportation systems. The competition aims to strengthen academic and technical information expertise in this field, recognized as fifth-generation transportation technology.

The competition seeks to provide participants with knowledge, understanding and skills regarding all components of Hyperloop systems, including levitation technologies, propulsion systems, communication infrastructure, mechanical components and socio-economic impacts like. It also promotes teamwork, innovation and applied engineering practices among participants.

Eligibility and Process

Teams of undergraduate, graduate and doctoral students from within and outside Türkiye who are currently enrolled in academic programs may participate. Teams may consist of a minimum of eight and a maximum of twenty-five members. Participants may receive mentorship support from academics and industry experts throughout the competition. The competition is conducted through a technical evaluation process comprising the following stages: Project Preliminary Assessment, Semi-Final Presentation, Development and Implementation. Evaluation criteria include innovation, feasibility, energy efficiency and passenger safety.

Competition Categories

Hyperloop Capsule Performance Competition

In this category, teams are evaluated based on the technical capabilities and performance of their developed Hyperloop capsules. The evaluation process includes the Development Report, Levitation and Propulsion Test Videos, Technical Design Report, and Final Evaluation Stage outputs.

Innovation Category

This category aims to foster innovative solutions targeting subsystems of Hyperloop systems. Participants may develop projects in the following subfields: Electromagnetic Levitation System Development, Propulsion System Development, Infrastructure Development, Communication System Development, Mechanical System Development, and Socio-Economic Impact.

Special Awards and Evaluation

In addition to technical performance, special awards are presented to recognize achievements that go beyond standard criteria:

• Steel Levitation Award: Awarded to the team that successfully achieves levitation using steel-based systems.
• Technical Board Special Award: Presented to teams that meet special criteria defined by the Technical Board. The evaluation process is carried out by the Advisory and Evaluation Board, which oversees the application of competition rules and is responsible for all technical decisions. All participants are required to comply with the provisions outlined in the Official Competition Rules.

National Technology Initiative and the Significance of the Competition

The TEKNOFEST Hyperloop Development Competition plays a pivotal role in line with Türkiye’s National Technology Initiative. The competition not only builds technical competencies but also supports the development of human resources that will contribute to Türkiye’s transportation infrastructure and technological independence.
