The Bhopal disaster occurred on December 3, 1984, in the city of Bhopal, India, at a pesticide plant owned by Union Carbide India Limited (UCIL). It is one of the worst industrial accidents in history, leading to severe human rights, environmental, and health crises.

Causes of the Disaster

At the UCIL factory in Bhopal, methyl isocyanate (MIC), a highly toxic chemical, was used in pesticide production. On December 3, 1984, an error by the factory's night-shift workers and inadequate safety measures led to an increase in pressure in an MIC storage tank. The rise in pressure caused the gas to leak from the plant into the surrounding area.

Scale of the Incident

MIC gas is extremely hazardous, causing severe damage to the eyes, respiratory system, and overall health. During the incident, the gas spread to Bhopal's slum areas. Approximately 30 tons of MIC gas were released into the atmosphere within the first few hours. This catastrophic leak resulted in thousands of deaths and left tens of thousands suffering from long-term health issues.

Human Casualties

The exact death toll from the disaster is disputed. Official reports estimate over 3,000 immediate deaths, though the total number may have risen to 15,000 over time. Additionally, over 500,000 people were exposed to the gas, with thousands suffering from chronic health problems.

Environmental and Health Impacts

In the aftermath, chemicals seeped into the environment, contaminating water sources and soil. Health issues included respiratory diseases, skin disorders, eye problems, cancer, and birth defects. Many survivors faced prolonged and debilitating health conditions.

Legal and Political Consequences

The Bhopal disaster sparked outrage in India and worldwide. Union Carbide, headquartered in the United States, sought to avoid accountability for the incident, turning it into an international controversy. Ultimately, the Indian government and the country's Supreme Court reached a settlement, with Union Carbide agreeing to pay $470 million in compensation. However, this amount was criticized as being insufficient, given the extensive and long-term damage.

The disaster highlighted the need for enforceable international standards for environmental safety, strategies to prevent similar accidents, and improved preparedness for industrial catastrophes.

Although some positive policy and industrial changes were made in India following the disaster, rapid industrialization and poorly regulated growth continued to pose significant environmental and health threats across the country.

In 2010, Union Carbide's former CEO, Warren Anderson, faced criticism for not being extradited to India. The company’s Indian subsidiary was acquired by Dow Chemical in 2001, but the issue of accountability remains contentious.

Films and Documentaries

The Bhopal disaster has been addressed in various films and documentaries:

  • Bhopal: A Prayer for Rain (2014): A dramatization of the disaster and the struggles faced by its victims.
  • The Bhopal Disaster (2016): A documentary exploring the event in detail.

Legacy

The disaster and the subsequent efforts to improve the health and environment of Bhopal’s residents have left a lasting impression. This tragedy continues to be remembered as a symbol of the need for justice and environmental protection worldwide.
