The film was co-directed by Charlie Mackesy and Peter Baynton. The 30-minute animation premiered during Christmas 2022 as a joint production by Apple TV+ and the BBC.

The film won the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film at the Oscars held in Los Angeles on March 12, 2023.

After the book's release in 2019, it was named Waterstones' Book of the Year and was shortlisted in the Non-Fiction Lifestyle Book of the Year category at the British Book Awards. The book has sold over 8 million copies worldwide and was translated into Turkish in 2021, published by Mundi Book.
