Learning Capacities During Early Childhood

Science regard early childhood as the period during which children’s learning capacities are highest and most rapidly developing. Early childhood education encompasses the period from birth until the start of primary school and retains its significance throughout life. Bloom’s research has shown that 50 percent of mental development is completed by age four, 30 percent between ages four and eight, and 20 percent between ages eight and seventeen.

Additionally, approximately 33 percent of an individual’s academic achievement is acquired between ages zero and six. During this period, children fulfill developmental tasks related to understanding events in their environment and adopting a humanistic thought framework. These developmental tasks enable children to become sensitive to their surroundings and contribute to the formation of their future personality structures.

Individuals who have received early childhood education typically exhibit more developed perception skills and are better able to translate their abilities into performance when faced with any event. During this stage, children continuously ask questions driven by their curiosity and thereby discover new knowledge. The information they acquire enables them to gain new experiences and uncover their own potential. The openness of young children to learning and their abundant energy create an ideal environment for the development of individual ability and skills.

Importance and Outcomes of the Stage

Early childhood is a critical period during which the foundation for lifelong developmental processes is laid. Therefore, the education provided during this stage plays a vital role in the child’s mental, emotional, and social development. Effective management of this stage by families and educators can positively influence children’s individual and societal success.
