The various states of the nafs—nafs-i emmâre, nafs-i levvâme, and nafs-i mutmainne—are treated as “spiritual characters.” Through these categories, the struggles and transformation processes occurring within the human inner world are depicted.

In this context, the book effectively has only one true character: the human being in struggle. The individual’s battle with their nafs is presented by the author through moral, psychological, and spiritual narration, offering the reader a conscious map that reflects their own personal struggle.
