The Hunt (Danish: Jagten) is a 2012 psychological drama film directed by Danish filmmaker Thomas Vinterberg. The screenplay was co-written by Vinterberg and Tobias Lindholm. The film premiered at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival, where lead actor Mads Mikkelsen won the award for Best Actor. A co-production between Denmark, Sweden, Belgium, and France, the film was released internationally under the title The Hunt.

Plot

The story is set in a small, close-knit town in Denmark. Lucas, a kindergarten teacher, is struggling to regain custody of his son following a divorce, while gradually rebuilding his social life. His life takes a dramatic turn when Klara, a young girl at the daycare where he works, makes a misguided statement that leads to Lucas being accused of pedophilia.

Although the allegation is based on a misunderstanding, Klara’s words are taken seriously by her family and the kindergarten staff, ultimately escalating into an official investigation. Rumors quickly spread throughout the town, deeply affecting Lucas’s social standing, relationships, and psychological well-being.

The film was given a limited release in the United States on 14 July 2013. In Turkey, it premiered on 18 October 2013. Following its initial festival screenings, the film entered commercial distribution in several countries.
