The United States shoots a drug-loaded ship that has departed from Venezuela

The attack on the vessel was announced to the public on 2 September 2025 by U.S. President Donald Trump. In a press statement at the White House it was stated that a military operation had been conducted against a vessel departing from Venezuela. The target of the operation was described as a maritime vessel suspected of carrying narcotics. The intervention took place in international waters off the southern Caribbean.

Targeted Vessel and Associated Network

The vessel struck was identified as being based in Venezuela and linked to drug trafficking activities. It was alleged to be connected to a criminal organization known as “Tren de Aragua” which operates in Venezuela and is one of the organized crime networks in Latin America.

Military Operation and Outcomes

As a result of the attack eleven people on board the vessel were killed. The United States stated that it suffered no military casualties during the operation. It was reported that the operation was carried out from the sea and that the targeted vessel was completely destroyed.

Visual Evidence and Controversies

Explosion footage related to the attack was rapidly disseminated on social media. The images show a small vessel at sea engulfed in flames and exploding. U.S. authorities released footage from before the operation but Venezuelan officials suggested that some of the published content may have been generated by artificial intelligence.

Diplomatic Reactions and Political Context

The Venezuelan government strongly condemned the attack. It was alleged that the United States had violated Venezuela’s sovereignty and targeted its natural resources. The U.S. administration stated that the operation was conducted in international waters as part of efforts to combat drug trafficking.

It was recalled that the United States had previously sent a submarine and seven warships to Venezuelan waters and has pursued a policy of increasing its military presence in Latin America against drug cartels.
