Tokyo Revengers (Japanese: 東京卍リベンジャーズ, Hepburn: Tōkyō Ribenjāzu) is an action and crime drama series written and illustrated by Ken Wakui. It features time travel elements and presents a modern interpretation of traditional Japanese delinquent youth (yankii) culture, centered on the theme of whether individual will can alter fate.

The series began serialization on 1 March 2017 in Kodansha’s Weekly Shōnen Magazine and concluded on 16 November 2022 with the 31st tankōbon volume. The manga quickly achieved high sales figures and was adapted into an anime in 2021 by the studio Liden Films. Due to its popularity, live-action films, stage plays, and various video games have been developed, forming a media franchise.

Universe and Plot

The series unfolds across a parallel timeline between the early 2000s in Japan and the year 2017. The narrative is built around a mechanism called “time leap.”

• Time Leap Mechanism: The protagonist can travel exactly 12 years into the past by shaking hands with a specific person (Naoto Tachibana) and reshape the future through the changes he makes in the past.

Takemichi Hanagaki, a 26-year-old man who has achieved nothing in life and is filled with regret, learns that his former girlfriend Hinata Tachibana and her brother Naoto were killed in a conflict involving the Tokyo Manji Gang (Toman). During a near-fatal accident, Takemichi time-leaps 12 years into the past and discovers that by shaking hands with the past version of Naoto, he gains the power to alter history. His goal is to rise through the ranks of the Tokyo Manji Gang, prevent its corruption, and break the chain of events leading to Hinata’s death.
