Tortum Floating Islands

Tortum Floating Islands are natural formations located on Zökün Lake in the Söğütlü Neighborhood of Tortum district, within Türkiye’s Erzurum province. The lake, approximately 54–55 kilometers from the city center of Erzurum, hosts six islands that are notable for their ability to move across the water surface. Identified by academics at Atatürk University, these formations are recognized among the region’s notable natural features due to their unique environmental characteristics and dynamic structure.^【1】

As part of these initiatives, platforms are planned to allow visitors to observe the lake and islands, along with the construction of eco-friendly wooden structures compatible with the natural environment. It is also planned to develop areas for welcoming visitors and spaces for selling local products.^【4】

The tourism potential of the area is envisioned not only for sightseeing but also for nature-based activities. Planned activities include camping, hiking, and birdwatching.

Conservation and Sustainability Approaches

The preservation of the natural structure of the area hosting the Floating Islands is considered a critical issue. It is therefore emphasized that tourism activities must be conducted while safeguarding the region’s flora and fauna.

Due to its status as a natural natural heritage site, various initiatives have been launched to place the area under protection. It has been announced that applications have been submitted to relevant authorities to grant the area protected status.^【5】
