UEFA Europa League 2024-2025 Quarterfinal Stage

UEFA Europe League 2024-2025 Season Quarter Finals are one of the elimination stages of the UEFA Europa League, a club-level competition organized by the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) and recognized as the continent’s second most prestigious tournament. In this round, eight teams competed in two-legged ties to advance to the semifinals.

The quarter-final matches were played under a two-legged knockout system. Following the first legs, all return matches kicked off on 17 April 2025 at 22:00 Turkish Time.

The first leg of the quarter-final match between English representative Manchester United and French representative Olympique Lyon ended in a 2-2 draw in Lyon. Lyon’s goals came from Cherki and Lacazette, while Manchester United’s goals were scored by Manuel Ugarte and Leny Yoro.

On 17 April 2025 at Old Trafford Stadium, the return leg saw home side Manchester United finish the first half 2-0 ahead with goals from Manuel Ugarte in the 10th minute and Diogo Dalot in the 45+1st minute. Lyon equalized in the second half through goals by Corentin Tolisso in the 71st minute and Nicolas Tagliafico in the 78th minute, resulting in a 2-2 draw after regular time, mirroring the first leg’s result. This meant the match proceeded to extra time.

In the first half of extra time, Lyon took a 4-2 lead with goals from Rayan Cherki in the 105th minute and Alexandre Lacazette from a penalty in the 110th minute. However, playing with ten men after Tolisso’s red card in the 89th minute, Lyon conceded a penalty goal from Bruno Fernandes in the 114th minute to reduce the deficit to 4-3, then equalized in the 120th minute through a shot by Kobbie Mainoo, and immediately after, in the 120+1st minute, Harry Maguire headed in a goal to make it 5-4 and secure progression to the semifinals.

This match is recorded in UEFA Europa League history as the first to feature five goals scored during extra time. Additionally, the winning goal scored in the 120+1st minute was the first ever goal to win a UEFA Europa League match in that minute.

The first leg of the quarter-final between Athletic Bilbao, representing Spain’s Basque region, and Scotland’s Rangers was played at Ibrox Stadium in Glasgow and ended in a goalless draw. During the match, Rangers played with ten men for approximately 77 minutes after Robin Pröpper received a red card in the 13th minute and successfully held off the away side Athletic Bilbao.

The return leg was played on 17 April 2025 at San Mamés Barria Stadium, where Athletic Bilbao won 2-0 with a penalty goal by Oihan Sancet in stoppage time of the first half and a header by Nico Williams from an Oscar de Marcos cross in the 80th minute. With a 2-0 aggregate victory, Athletic Bilbao advanced to the semifinals.

Rangers’ national team player Rıdvan Yılmaz was unable to continue after suffering an injury in the 23rd minute. The Scottish side also had to make changes to their squad due to an injury to defender Leon Balogun.

The first leg between English representative Tottenham Hotspur and German side Eintracht Frankfurt ended in a 1-1 draw. Hugo Ekitiké scored for Tottenham, while Frankfurt equalized in the latter stages of the match. Tottenham hit the post twice and failed to score further goals despite several saves by goalkeeper Kauã Santos.

The return leg was played in Frankfurt, Germany, where Tottenham won 1-0 away to secure a 2-1 aggregate victory and qualify for the last four of the UEFA Europa League. Frankfurt’s national team player Can Uzun came on as a substitute in the 58th minute.

In the first leg played in Bodø, Norway, home side Bodo/Glimt defeated Italian representative Lazio 2-0 with two goals from Ulrik Saltnes. Lazio goalkeeper Christos Mandas prevented further goals with several key saves in the closing stages. After the match, Lazio head coach Marco Baroni announced that the return leg would focus heavily on man-to-man marking.

In the return leg at the Rome Olympic Stadium, Lazio won 3-1. The aggregate score of 3-3 led to a penalty shootout, in which Bodo/Glimt prevailed 3-2 to advance to the UEFA Europa League semifinals.

Following the quarter-finals, the draw conducted by UEFA determined the following 2024-2025 season semifinal fixtures:

• Manchester United – Athletic Bilbao
• Tottenham Hotspur – Bodo/Glimt

The semifinal matches will be played over two legs; the first legs will take place on 1 May 2025 and the return legs on 8 May 2025.

• The Manchester United versus Lyon match was the first in UEFA Europa League history to feature five goals scored during extra time.
• Harry Maguire’s goal in the 120+1st minute was the first winning goal ever scored in that minute in UEFA Europa League history.
• Athletic Bilbao scored a total of 12 goals and conceded only 2 in their five home UEFA Europa League matches.
• Bodo/Glimt won four consecutive home UEFA matches against Italian teams and became the first Norwegian club to reach the semifinals of a European competition.
• Tottenham Hotspur joined the group of teams that advanced to the next round with an away victory in this stage of the tournament.

As part of Europe’s second-most prestigious club competition, the 2024–25 UEFA Europa League quarter-finals were organized by the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA). Eight teams competed in home-and-away fixtures for a place in the final four.

All second-leg matches kicked off simultaneously at 22:00 (TRT) on 17 April 2025, following the initial legs played earlier that month.

The return fixture at Rome’s Stadio Olimpico ended in a 3–1 win for Lazio. With the aggregate score tied 3–3, the match went to a penalty shootout. Bodo/Glimt prevailed 3–2, becoming the first Norwegian club to reach the semi-finals of a major UEFA competition.
