"Upload" is an American science fiction, comedy, and drama web series. The series is set in a technologically advanced future in 2033 where people can upload their consciousness into a virtual world after death. It tells the story of Nathan Brown, a computer programmer who experiences an unexpected death.

Production Process and Details

Principal photography for the series took place between 5 March and 10 May 2019 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Some exterior shots and limited interior scenes for the Lakeview virtual reality world were filmed at the Mohonk Mountain House and Preserve in New Paltz, New York. Each episode has a runtime of approximately 30 minutes. The series was created by Greg Daniels and stars Andy Allo, Robbie Amell, and Allegra Edwards.

Plot

Nathan is uploaded by his wealthy girlfriend Ingrid Kannerman into Lakeview, an expensive and luxurious virtual world described as a serene lakeside retreat. In this digital realm, Nathan meets Nora Antony, a customer service representative known as an "Angel" who assists him. A close bond develops between Nathan and Nora, which gradually transforms into a secret romance.

As the series progresses, the question arises whether Nathan’s death was an accident or a murder. Nora notices anomalies in Nathan’s memories during the upload process, and these corrupted memories point to events surrounding his unplanned death. Nathan is a computer programmer who developed a code for free uploads. In fact, he had attempted to sell this code behind his teammate’s back for a high price but failed, leading to his death. It is revealed that the person who seized the code and ordered Nathan’s elimination is his neighbor in Lakeview, David Choak. Choak uses Nathan’s original code to establish Freeyond, a free upload system. It is uncovered that Freeyond’s true purpose is to eliminate impoverished individuals after uploading them, thereby erasing the uploaded consciousnesses and influencing real-world decisions. Nathan and Nora, having discovered this scheme, seek a way to stop it.
