Usain St. Leo Bolt was born on 21 August 1986 in Sherwood Content, a rural town in northwestern Jamaica. Bolt spent his childhood in rural Jamaica and showed an early interest in sports. During his elementary school years, he began playing cricket and football, and his natural talent for running soon attracted the attention of his teachers. While attending William Knibb Memorial High School, he was guided by athletics coaches toward the discipline of sprinting.
In 2002, at the age of 15, Bolt won his first international success by securing a gold medal in the 200 metres at the World Junior Athletics Championships held in Kingston. This victory made him the youngest male athlete ever to become world champion in his age group. Although he competed at the 2004 Athens Olympics, injury prevented him from achieving success. However, in the following years he consistently improved his performance and became a globally recognized athlete.
The turning point in Bolt’s career was the 2008 Beijing Olympics. There he:
These achievements instantly turned him into a global superstar.
At the 2009 World Athletics Championships in Berlin, Bolt set two new world records:
These records remain valid to this day, and Bolt holds the title of the fastest human in history in this discipline.
Bolt competed in three different Olympics and won a total of eight gold medals:
However, one of his gold medals from 2008 was revoked due to a doping violation by his teammate Nesta Carter. As a result, his official gold medal count has been updated to seven.
Bolt stands 1.95 metres tall and weighed approximately 94 kilograms during his competitive years. While sprinters are typically shorter and lighter, Bolt’s long legs and powerful explosive muscles enabled him to stand out due to his exceptional stride length. Under the guidance of his coach Glen Mills, Bolt regularly trained in strength, endurance and technical running. His training focused on reaction time, stride frequency and acceleration phases.
Usain Bolt officially retired from athletics in 2017. After retirement, he turned to football, a passion he had nurtured since childhood. In 2018, he underwent a trial with Central Coast Mariners, a team in Australia’s A-League. He played in several pre-season matches but ultimately abandoned football without signing a professional contract.
