Vrahori (Agrinio) Massacre

The 1821 Vrahori (Agrinio) Massacre was an event in which Muslim Turkish civilians in the region, who had already surrendered their weapons in the first year of the Greek Revolt uprising, were collectively killed by rebel Greek elements.

The Greek uprising that began in 1821 triggered a widespread rebellion against Ottoman rule and the Turkish population in the Morea and surrounding areas, leading to violent incidents targeting civilians in various regions. Within this context, Vrahori (modern-day Agrinio) became a major site of conflict and massacre during the first year of the revolt.

During the Greek uprising, coordinated or locally organized revolts against Ottoman authority began in various regions. As the uprising progressed, armed Greek groups targeted settlements, resulting in heavy casualties among the civilian population.

The uprising in the town of Vrahori began on 9 July 1821. Prior to the uprising, an agreement had been reached between the local Turkish/Muslim population and the rebel elements, under which the Turkish/Muslim civilians were required to surrender their weapons. As a result of this agreement, the Muslim Turkish population in the area handed over their arms. During the uprising that erupted in Vrahori on 9 July 1821, 500 Turks who had surrendered their weapons in accordance with the agreement and were thus defenseless were killed. Subsequently, all traces of the Ottoman period were erased and Vrahori was rebuilt from scratch.
