World Miners' Day

World Miners’ Day is observed annually on 4 December to honor the labor of miners and to remember the challenges and risks they face.

The origin of this day traces back to the Roman Empire, when Saint Barbara, who found refuge among miners in İzmit, suffered persecution. By dedicating 4 December to all miners worldwide, Saint Barbara came to be recognized as the patron saint of miners, and this date was adopted by miners as their own day. ^【1】

Characteristics of Mining and Occupational Health and Safety Risks

Mining is one of the oldest, most important and most dangerous professions in human history. While miners contribute to the economic development of societies by extracting valuable minerals and energy resources, they also voluntarily participate in search and rescue operations during natural disasters such as earthquakes.

According to data from the International Labour Organization (ILO), although mining accounts for only 1% of the global workforce, it is responsible for approximately 8% of all fatal workplace accidents worldwide. In Türkiye, 4.12% of all workplace accidents and occupational diseases occur in the mining sector. ^【2】 

Miners are continuously exposed to the following hazards:

• physical hazards (noise, vibration),
• chemical hazards (dust and harmful gases),
• ergonomic hazards (heavy lifting, poor posture),
• biological and psychosocial hazards.

These hazards lead to serious health problems such as hearing loss, pneumoconiosis, lung cancer, musculoskeletal disorders, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder.

4 December, World Miners’ Day, is an important opportunity to recognize the intense labor and sacrifices of miners, strengthen occupational health and safety measures, and raise awareness for the creation of healthier working environments.
