World Peace and Development Science Day

World Day of Peace and Development through Science is an international observance celebrated annually on 10 November by UNESCO. This day aims to highlight the importance of science in society, encourage citizens to engage in discussions on emerging scientific issues, and underscore science’s contribution to daily life and the sustainability of communities.

Purpose

The World Day of Peace and Development through Science seeks to integrate science more closely with society. Its goal is to inform citizens about scientific advancements and make visible the contributions of scientists to the protection of our planet and the sustainability of societies. Events mobilize all stakeholders—from government officials and media outlets to educational institutions and students—on the role of science in peace and development, and facilitate a better understanding of science’s impact on society.

History

The origins of this day trace back to the World Science Conference held in Budapest in 1999. At this conference, it was decided to annually reaffirm commitments regarding the relationship between science and society, and to follow up on the recommendations of the “Declaration on the Use of Scientific Knowledge” and the “Science Agenda: Framework for Action.” The first World Day of Peace and Development through Science, under the auspices of UNESCO, was observed on 10 November 2002. Celebrations were carried out in collaboration with numerous partners including governments, intergovernmental and civil society organizations, UNESCO National Commissions, scientific and research institutions, professional associations, media, science teachers, and schools. The day has championed initiatives and financial support fostering cooperation among scientists living in peace across different regions of the world, contributing to the creation of initiatives such as the UNESCO-supported Israel-Palestine Science Organization (IPSO).

Significance

The World Day of Peace and Development through Science brings to the forefront the critical role of science in building sustainable societies. It makes visible the contributions of scientists and scientific knowledge production to peace and development goals, while ensuring public awareness and participation in discussions on scientific matters. In this way, societies are empowered to make informed decisions and recognize the role of science in daily life and future planning. Themes and Global Celebrations

The theme for 2025 has been set as “Trust, Transformation and Tomorrow: The Science We Need for 2050.” This theme underscores future scientific needs and the importance of the science-society relationship. In August 2023, the United Nations General Assembly declared the years 2024–2033 the International Decade of Sciences for Sustainable Development. This initiative necessitates strengthening scientific knowledge, innovation, and the links between policy, politics, and society for the Agenda 2030 and beyond. The 2025 World Day of Peace and Development through Science provides a global platform to discuss the relationship between science and society and to identify future needs. UNESCO encourages participation in celebrations worldwide with the aim of strengthening trust, collaboration, and inclusivity between science and society.
