

Ahmet Ümit was born in Gaziantep in 1960. After completing his primary and secondary education in Gaziantep, he moved to Istanbul and enrolled in the Public Administration Department at Marmara University. In the 1980s, after participating in political activities, he abandoned active politics and turned to the world of literature. He began his writing career in 1989 with the publication of Sokağın Zulası. Ümit is particularly known for his works in the crime fiction genre. He achieved great success with the novels Sis ve Gece (1996), Kar Kokusu (1998), and Patasana (2000). Ahmet Ümit, whose works have been translated into 20 languages across 60 countries, is today one of Türkiye’s most prominent writers.
Ümit was born in Gaziantep as the seventh child of kilim merchant Mehmet Ümit and tailor Fatma Ümit. He completed his primary and secondary education in Gaziantep. While attending Gaziantep Atatürk High School, he was forced along with a group of friends to transfer and finish his high school studies in Ergani, Diyarbakır, due to his involvement in political events. In 1978, he moved to Istanbul. In 1979, he began studying at the Public Administration Department of Marmara University. During his university years, he continued his left-wing activism.
He became a member of the Progressive Youth Association, affiliated with the Communist Party of Türkiye. As a member of this youth organization, he led a group protesting the 1982 constitution. In 1981, he married Vildan Ümit, whom he had met through the Communist Party. Their daughter was born the same year. He graduated from university in 1983. Between 1985 and 1986, he studied at the Academy of Social Sciences in Moscow. During this period, he began questioning socialism. After spending years as a political activist, Ahmet Ümit abandoned active politics upon returning to Türkiye and turned toward literature.
Ahmet Ümit began writing with poetry. His first literary work, the poetry collection Sokağın Zulası, published in 1989, marked the start of his literary career. After Sokağın Zulası, Ümit wrote numerous short stories, essays, and novels, but it was crime fiction that brought him fame and made him one of Türkiye’s most widely read authors. In the 1990s, when this genre was not widely popular in Türkiye, his early crime novels such as Sis ve Gece (1996), Kar Kokusu (1998), and Patasana (2000) generated significant acclaim. Ahmet Ümit began to be recognized as one of the finest crime writers in Turkish literature.
Ahmet Ümit is one of Türkiye’s most widely read and prolific contemporary authors. In addition to his writing, he has participated in numerous artistic and cultural projects. Since the 1990s, he has written literary columns for various newspapers. In 2010, he presented the Habertürk program “Yaşadığın Şehir,” introducing audiences to different cities and regions of Türkiye. Since 2016, he has been a member of the editorial board of 221B Dergi, Türkiye’s only crime fiction magazine, and contributes articles to it.
In the 2014 autumn/winter issue of Notos Dergisi, he served as guest editor for a special dossier on crime fiction. Between 2015 and 2016, he co-hosted the NTV program “Önce Şiir Vardı” with İskender Pala and Mario Levi, focusing on literature and culture. In 2006, Ahmet Ümit adapted his novel Ninatta’nın Bileziği into an opera. The opera “Ninatta” was first staged in 2017 at the Kadıköy Municipality Süreyya Opera House.
Additionally, based on his stories, the TV series “Karanlıkta Koşanlar,” directed by Uğur Yücel, and “Satan Ayrıntıda Gizlidir,” directed by Cevdet Mercan, were produced. His novel “Sis ve Gece” was adapted into a film in 2007 by Turgut Yasalar, and “Bir Ses Böler Gece” was adapted by Ersan Arseven. In 2019, Ahmet Ümit wrote the screenplay for the film “Hello Beautiful Vatanım,” which explores parallels between his own life and that of Nazım Hikmet.
The books “Şeytan Ayrıntıda Gizlidir,” “Agatha’nın Anahtarı,” “İstanbul Hatırası,” “Kavim,” and “Kırlangıç Çığlığı” were adapted into radio drama format and broadcast on NTV Radyo. The work “Love Köpekliktir” was staged as a theatrical production.

Interest in Ahmet Ümit abroad continues to grow. His works have reached four million readers in 60 countries and 20 languages. In 2017, a conference titled “Translating Ahmet Ümit into Foreign Languages” was held at the Okan University campus. Ahmet Ümit is among the contemporary Turkish writers who represent Türkiye in world literature and continues to live in Istanbul.
Ahmet Ümit explained his choice of crime fiction as a genre with the words: “From age 14 to 30, I lived 16 years of fugitive chase. 16 years of fear, 16 years of struggle, 16 years of wondering if I would be caught. I lived through all this, and my body constantly craves adrenaline. I write crime fiction because while writing, I am living it.”
