Âşık Veysel Museum is a memorial museum dedicated to the life, art, and cultural legacy of the folk poet Âşık Veysel Şatıroğlu. The museum is located in the village of Sivrialan, in the district of Şarkışla, Sivas Province, Türkiye, in the very house where Âşık Veysel was born, raised, and spent most of his life.

Founding and History

The foundation of the museum was laid after Âşık Veysel’s death, driven by the desire to preserve his cultural heritage. The house where he was born, raised, and spent his final years was nationalized by the Ministry of Culture in 1979. After three years of restoration work, it was opened to the public as a museum in 1982. This museum stands as one of the few in Türkiye dedicated to a folk poet.

In 2012, the museum was renovated under the Museum Cultural Alliance Project, implemented through a collaboration between the European Union and Türkiye. The project was supported by the European Union – Türkiye Intercultural Dialogue: Museums Grant Program. As part of the initiative led by the Sivas Museum Directorate, the museum building was restored, exhibition spaces were reorganized according to modern museological principles, and environmentally friendly materials were used. Within the same project, the documentary “Âşık Veysel Documentary” was produced and installed for display in the museum. The documentary is presented to visitors with English subtitles and sign language options, and it is also regularly screened at the SRF/Synskadades Museum in Sweden, the project’s international partner.

During these events, folk poets, artists, academics, and local communities gather to perform Âşık Veysel’s works, keep his philosophy alive, and pass on his cultural values to future generations.
