Eymir Lake is a natural freshwater lake located within the boundaries of the Gölbaşı district, southeast of Ankara, the capital of Türkiye. With an area of approximately 1.2 square kilometres, the lake lies within the grounds of Middle East Technical University and is about 20 kilometres from the centre of Ankara. Due to its proximity to the urban centre, it is regarded as an important recreational and natural habitat area.
Eymir Lake is situated in a transition zone between steppe and forest ecosystems. Tree species such as Turkish pine, cedar and juniper are common around the lake. In addition, the area provides natural habitats for various bird species and small mammals. The lake serves as a stopover for migratory birds and features aquatic vegetation along its shoreline. These characteristics contribute to the conservation of biological diversity.

In 1956, the area containing the lake was allocated to Middle East Technical University, after which various afforestation, environmental planning and landscaping initiatives were carried out. Management responsibility lies with Middle East Technical University, and the lake’s surroundings are protected through controlled access policies. This approach enables the preservation of the lake’s natural characteristics while balancing public use.
Eymir Lake is used for a variety of recreational activities including walking, cycling, rowing, angling and picnicking. A controlled access system aims to regulate visitor numbers and protect the natural balance. The lake’s perimeter is particularly notable as a key area where urban residents interact with nature, especially on weekends. In addition, infrastructure adjustments have been made to ensure accessibility for people with disabilities, supporting social inclusivity.
Urban expansion, vehicle traffic and unregulated visitor activities generate various environmental pressures on the lake and its surroundings. These pressures can negatively affect water quality, shoreline ecosystems and biodiversity. However, rehabilitation efforts and environmental monitoring measures implemented under the area’s management plan aim to mitigate these impacts.
