Islam Makhachev was born on 27 September 1991 in Makhachkala, a city in the Dagestan region of Russia. Of Lak descent, Makhachev developed an interest in combat sports at a young age and, with his family’s support, began his sports career early. Makhachev defended his title for the first time in 2023. On 12 February 2023 at UFC 284, he faced Alexander Volkanovski, who was then ranked number one in the world.
