Architectural Layout and Structural Elements

The fortress consists entirely of architectural features carved directly into the natural rock substrate. Key elements include:

  • Rock-cut entrance gate: Access to the fortress is achieved through a narrow and sheltered doorway carved into the rock face.
  • Cuneiform inscription plaque: The inscription located immediately beside the entrance is one of the most significant archaeological finds, revealing the historical value of the structure.
  • Staircase traces: Worn stone steps leading upward from the entrance facilitate movement within the fortress.
  • Rock-cut tombs: Two distinct rock-cut tombs within the interior area provide insights into burial practices of the period.
  • Tunnel system: A rock-carved tunnel approximately 30–40 meters in length may have served as a secret passage or shelter.
  • Cistern: A water cistern carved into the rock on the eastern side ensured the fortress’s self-sufficiency in water supply.

Chronology and Archaeological Significance

The historical origins of Kale Köyü Kalesi are linked to the Urartians, one of the major civilizations that influenced Anatolia. The cuneiform inscription found at the site dates the structure specifically to the 7th century BCE. This inscription is a rare example that not only establishes the construction date of the fortress but also provides valuable information on Urartian stonemasonry, language, and construction techniques of the period.
