Lake Yarışlı

Lake Yarışlı is a shallow, saline, and tectonic-origin lake located within the boundaries of Yeşilova district in Burdur Province, Türkiye Situated at an altitude of approximately 854 meters above sea level, the lake lies about 40 km southwest of Lake Burdur and around 15 km east of Lake Salda. As a closed-basin lake, it stands out not only for its ecological significance as a crucial stopover and feeding ground for migratory birds but also for the natural and cultural elements surrounding it.

Geological and Hydrological Features

Lake Yarışlı was formed as a result of tectonic subsidence and remains a shallow, broad water body for most of the year. It is not fed by any direct streams; instead, it relies on precipitation, surface runoff, and groundwater inputs. During the summer months, high evaporation causes the lake’s surface area to shrink and its salinity to increase. The slightly alkaline and saline nature of the water fosters a unique ecological environment.

Biodiversity and Ecological Importance

Lake Yarışlı is located on major bird migration routes and thus hosts numerous bird species, especially during spring and autumn migrations. Prominent bird species observed at the lake include greater flamingos (Phoenicopterus roseus), ruddy shelducks (Tadorna ferruginea), white-headed ducks (Oxyura leucocephala), and pied avocets (Recurvirostra avosetta). According to 2023 data, approximately 300 flamingos were recorded at the lake, underscoring its importance as a wetland for migratory birds.

The lake and its surroundings are designated as an Important Nature Area (INA), serving as breeding, feeding, and resting grounds for many bird species. Especially in spring, the rising water levels create shallow wetlands that facilitate birds’ breeding and feeding activities. In this respect, Lake Yarışlı is considered a critical site for maintaining the ecological integrity of the region.

Environmental Threats and Conservation Status

Lake Yarışlı faces various threats, including global climate change, unregulated agricultural irrigation, environmental pollution, and habitat loss. Agricultural activities, in particular, have led to a decrease in both surface and groundwater feeding the lake, negatively impacting its water level and salinity. These changes are shrinking the habitat available to resident and migratory species, thus posing a threat to the lake's biodiversity.

Although it is not designated as a Ramsar site or national park, Lake Yarışlı is recognized by the Doğa Derneği (Nature Association) as an Important Nature Area and holds potential for ecotourism, especially birdwatching.

Cultural and Socioeconomic Context

The lake derives its name from the nearby village of Yarışlı. Agriculture and animal husbandry are the main economic activities in the region. The presence of eye-catching bird species, such as flamingos, attracts birdwatchers and nature photographers, contributing to the local economy. While there are no large-scale settlements around the lake, the villagers regard it both as a natural resource and a symbolic feature of their landscape.
