Spider-Man is a 2002 action, adventure, and science fiction film directed by Sam Raimi. Based on the comic book character of the same name by Marvel Comics, the film stars Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst, and Willem Dafoe. This American production tells the story of Peter Parker, a high school student who gains extraordinary abilities after being bitten by a genetically modified spider.

Peter Parker is a shy and intelligent high school student living with his uncle Ben and aunt May in New York, where he is often ostracized by his peers. Secretly in love with his neighbor Mary Jane Watson, Peter is bitten by a genetically modified spider during a school field trip to Columbia University’s genetics laboratory. The next day, he discovers that his body has become stronger, his vision has sharpened, and he now possesses superhuman abilities including wall-crawling and the ability to shoot webs from his wrists.^【1】.

Meanwhile, Norman Osborn, CEO of Oscorp, tests a performance-enhancing chemical on himself to avoid losing military funding. As a result, he gains physical strength but loses his sanity, transforming into the villain known as the Green Goblin. He launches deadly attacks against his rival company Quest Aerospace and Oscorp’s board of directors.

Wanting to impress Mary Jane, Peter seeks to buy a car and enters a local wrestling tournament to earn money. Although he defeats the wrestler Bone Saw in the ring, he is underpaid by the promoter. In response, Peter deliberately fails to intervene when an armed thief escapes after robbing the promoter. That same night, the thief kills Peter’s uncle Ben while fleeing in a stolen car. Inspired by his uncle’s advice that “with great power comes great responsibility,” Peter decides to use his abilities to fight crime, adopting the identity of Spider-Man and beginning to protect the city. To earn money, he sells photographs of Spider-Man to J. Jonah Jameson, the editor-in-chief of the Daily Bugle newspaper.

The conflict between Spider-Man and the Green Goblin becomes personal when the Goblin discovers Peter’s true identity. During a Thanksgiving dinner, the Goblin notices a cut on Peter’s arm and realizes that Spider-Man is Peter Parker. He first attacks Peter’s aunt May, then kidnaps Mary Jane. The Goblin forces Spider-Man to choose between saving Mary Jane or a cable car full of children. With the help of civilians on the bridge, Spider-Man rescues both. In the final battle inside an abandoned building, the Green Goblin dies when his own glider crashes into him during a trap he set. Harry Osborn, blaming Spider-Man for his father’s death, vows revenge, while Mary Jane confesses her love for Peter. However, Peter rejects her feelings to protect her from his enemies.

Sam Raimi directed the film, with a screenplay written by David Koepp, Scott Rosenberg, and James Vanderbilt. The producing team includes Stan Lee, Avi Arad, Ian Bryce, Laura Ziskin, Steven P. Saeta, and Heidi Fugeman. The original score was composed by Danny Elfman, while the songs “Hero” by Chad Kroeger and “When It Started” by The Strokes were featured in the soundtrack. Cinematography was handled by Don Burgess, and editing by Bob Murawski and Arthur Coburn.

Released in Türkiye on 14 June 2002 and screened for a total of 30 weeks, it was watched by 643,199 spectators and generated ₺5,112,485 in box office revenue.^【3】.

The film won a total of 17 awards and received 65 nominations across various organizations. At the 2003 Academy Awards (Oscars), it was nominated for Best Sound and Best Visual Effects.^【4】 At the Saturn Awards, Danny Elfman won Best Music, and the film was nominated for Best Fantasy Film, Best Director (Sam Raimi), Best Actor (Tobey Maguire), and Best Actress (Kirsten Dunst).
